Rhône by Roger Sabon 2006

Côte du Rhône, France. 14% alcohol. I assume Grenache and Shiraz etc. Cork. Approx $A22. Most sensible people would stick to cold beer or white wine on a hot mid summer's night. . . being very determined and having access to a fridge, I tasted this delicious red wine. It was chilled for an hour, dropping its temperature to around 10 degrees C. Tasted in this manner, it smells and feels like a Beaujolais....

Rosenblum "Abba Vineyard" Syrah 2005 wine review by (PB)

This is another amazing wine from Rosenblum. This single vineyard Syrah from Lodi is just plain wonderful! Deep black cherry hue with a bouquet of pure black cherry, cola, mint, and baker's chocolate with sweet banana chip notes--I kid you not. Wow. Palate--Elegant tannins with a rich velvety texture bursting with berries, berries and more berries all integrated splendidly. This was GREAT with my...

Chateau St. Michelle Syrah 2002 wine review by (PB)

Dark black cherry hue with big fruity bouquet of minty black cherry and plum. Palate--relaxed tannins with prevalent evergreen notes on top of dark berry fruit. Finishes a little quick. This Washington state wine is made in the popular style and is pleasant enough for the right mood. For around $25, I'd rather spend it on something from K Vinters (also Washington state) or a Santa Barbara Syrah. Raise...

Rosenblum Late Harvest Zinfandel--Rosie Rabbit Vineyard--2003 wine review by (PB)

Zinfandel a desert wine? If it's from the masters of the zen of the zinfandel grape--you betcha! Dark black cherry pigmentation with raisin, currant, black cherry, coconut and prunes--and that's just in the bouquet. Palate--rich, sweetness of each of the fruits mentioned above but all in wonderful harmony. This was a surprise. I had only one other late harvest Zin (fromTemecula, Ca.) and it was not...

Dr. Konstantin Frank 2007 Dry Riesling

Of all the Finger Lakes wines that I review every year, those from Dr. Konstantin Frank are among my favorites. Why? Well, for one, the whites are consistently good, especially the aromatic whit varieties like riesling and Gewürztraminer. For another,...

2004 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) (France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru)

This is an exceptionally good version of Beausejour. Has dark color, great nose, dense fruit and elegance to it on the palate. Finishes strong and remains, at its heart, true to the style of the estate. Lovely wine and at today's prices, a steal.

Dr. Konstantin Frank 2007 Reserve Gewurztraminer

Too often the descriptor "food wine" is used in a negative way, used to describe wines that aren't all that pleasing on their own. This is, of course, preposterous, and is just a way for writers to soften the blow...

The 10th Day of Christmas: Counting Down to the End

We continue with reasonably-priced alternatives to Champagne. The non-vintage Charles Duret Crémant de Bourgogne is composed of 70 percent pinot noir and 30 percent chardonnay grapes. Made in the venerable champagne method — or méthode traditionelle — this delicate, taut and paradoxically creamy sparkling wine offers uplifting aromas of biscuits and hazelnuts and enticing meadowy [...]

Jansz Tasmania Premium Cuvee NV

I opened this alongside the 2004 Jansz ($39.95) and for what it is, all things being equal, preferred the lower priced NV. I’d also add that I did not think the standard Domaine Chandon NV was much chop (coarse but ok) and the 2005 Wolf Blass Gold Label Pinot Chardonnay ($25.95) looked harsh and edgy. [...]
