The photos today of the Ferrari 308 GTB rally car combined with the VW Thing (which rallied against the Allied Forces) got us thinking again about rally cars. Anything can be a rally racer, whether AWD/FWD/RWD or even 6WD. From the diminutive Kia Rio to the insane Suzuki Escudo, anything can be rallied. Anything... Just look at today's DOTS retrospective . Would we rally a Porsche 356 ? Yes. 1977...
We've never heard of the Scandinavian speed shop Makela Auto Tuning, but we want to be their best friends. These guys are rally and exotic car aficionados of high order, and loving documentarians of their craft. As such there are over 200 images on their site of the transformation of a run of the mill Ferrari 308 GTB into a rip-snorting FIA Group IV spec rally machine. Our only question is why this...
The 1984 Ferrari 308 that Edmunds has been testing for the past year is for sale. They purchased it for $28,000 and spent $5,000 on repairs over the course of the year. Wonder how much they'll get for it? Probably not as much as they get for the 2002 BMW M3 that the staffers have [...]
While the 8-door '57 Chrysler limo almost beat out the stretched Ferrari 400i limo in our last Choose Your Eternity poll (and what an upset of reigning PCH Superpower, Italy, that would have been!), V12 power and Italian build quality seem to have triumphed over fins and rust. Today we need to see how Italy fares against its fellow PCH Superpower, Great Britain (with the winner moving on to take on...
When I was growing up in the 80’s which I have to say were the best years of my life, there were a number of great cars on our roads and on the TV. The Ferrari 308 from Magnum P.I or the Ferrari Daytona from Miami Vice, however my favorite car had to be the [...]
Is there any Hell Project that can compete against a car with chain drive, one carburetor per 200cc of engine displacement, and pretty much zilch in terms of parts availability? We can't say for sure, but we now know that more than 60% of Jalopnik readers surveyed believe that the Honda S800 out-hells the Lotus Europa. Today we're going for a unifying theme that doesn't have much to do with the type...

So I'm driving our Long-Term 1984 Ferrari 308 home on PCH, and I'm again amazed by the disparity I see between cars and homes on this stretch of American road. While you can pick up a mid-1980s Ferrari like ours for around $30,000, the cars I see on my commute range from $100,000 Porsche 911s to $200,000 Bentley Continentals to $300,000 Lamborghini Murcielagos. But here's the tricky part: I've seen...
The Ferrari GTO (often referred to as Ferrari 288 GTO) was an exotic homologation (thus the O) of the Ferrari 308 GTB produced in 1984 through 1986. Background The Ferrari GTO was built to compete in the new Group B Race series and a minimum of 200 cars were required for homologation. However as only Ferrari and [...]
Something new everyday. Did any of you know that there were in fact four Group B Ferrari 308s? We had no idea, and we thought we knew the Killer Bs . Davey G sent me info on these cars as part of our continuing fight over the Mustache Ride . Here's the skinny: In 1983 four Group B 308s were developed and they weren't that much different from the road cars. The initial car featured a 288 hp 2-valve...
We work hard. Davey and I are up until all hours of the night screaming at each other over Ferrari 308s (no, really ). Murilee spends the bulk of her his free time wandering the streets of Alameda stalking fresh models . Bumbeck calls me every weekend about some French/Italian or Japanese car show/ drag race he's photographing. Wert has stopped sleeping entirely and Spin hasn't called his mother for...
From the mind of Davey G... First of all, yes, Herr Johnson and I actually have conversations about things like this. A lot. Constantly, actually. So you can think of this as settling a bet for us. Also, some of you may recall the last time we put the 308 up to a vote it handily beat out the Lamborghini Jalpa by a 20% margin. But that was then. This time the budget Ferrari is facing the heavyweight...
Alex Roy was just recognized as the record holder for driving from NY to Santa Monica pier in 31 hours and 4 minutes, besting the time set by "David Diem and Doug Turner clocked in a Ferrari 308...
I just read an interesting little article where Inside Line tests the 2007 Kia Sedona EX minivan versus the 1984 Ferrari 308 GTSi (Magnum's car) in a legit comparison. What I found the most exciting, actually, is that they both currently cost the same amount! I have to say that the 308 body design (and its various iterations) is pretty much my favorite car design evar.
