We get told some right old cobblers in this business, by companies who would like us to believe, care, or, more likely, just idly repeat some of the nonsense they feed us. Bad enough are non-news press releases (care, for example, that Spandau Ballet have chosen the Ford S-Max as their tour support wagon? No, I thought not). But it’s the technical stuff we’re sometimes expected to swallow...

I do enjoy being the bearer of somewhat upbeat news. The global financial meltdown may not have ended just yet, but there are signs that it has stopped spreading so fast. I know this because it seems that car buyers are drifting back to the showroom. I’d heard that things were busier, so I decided to ask. At times like these, I find car brokers know best. “It’s the bigger one’s,...

In an effort not to be remotely controversial this week, I’ve decided that used cars are rubbish. After all, someone else has scuffed the trim, skipped that service and crunched those gears without a thought for the next keeper. Much better to cheer up your drive with something new and sparkly and - it has to be said - cheap. If you have recently stolen a large amount of petty cash, sold a body...

The Insignia is the foremost Opel to win in 22 years but General Motors’ European company has been runner-up four times and in 2007 the Opel Corsa lost by just two points to the Ford S-Max. Ford has won the award five times but this is the second time it has lost by just one point.
