Even though the black-bumper Midget was a cruel parody of the ridiculously fun pre-Malaise version, it's still saddening to see one among all the Hyundai Excels and Geo Prizms in my local self-service wrecking yard. This one has the dusty, bleached look of a car that spent a decade or three rotting in a back yard prior to its final ride behind a tow truck. Look at all those good parts! Doesn't anyone...

Hey everyone Hope you are all doing wellSo last weekend we went up to a mountain range about 3 hours from Melbourne called the Grampians. We drove our sweet ass ride up there our 1998 Hyundai Excel to visit with one of Trents dads friends named Mark. He lives on an acreage near a small town called Pomonal. We had a great ride up seen some kangaroos and lots of birds and arrived at Marks

There is one thing that I have learned about cars such as my old Hyundai Excel. Once one thing starts breaking down on the car, a multitude of things start breaking down, and usually in short order. First, my water pump went bad on the car. At first, I thought the thermostat went bad on the [...]

Snapping at the heels of the Mitsubishi Charisma (which had none), the Hyundai Excel (which didn’t), and the Smart (which isn’t), Mercedes will introduce in Paris its idea of an E-class shooting brake, which it calls the Concept Fascination (pics here via Spiegel). Fascination, eh? Swabian bubble-think (which is what this misnomer probably is a [...]

Ever been driving down a road when all of a sudden a souped-up car flies by you? But -- that car isn't really a sports car (like a Mustang or Camaro). No, it's a Kia, or a Hyundai Excel, or...

My recent twenty-year high school reunion brought back some great memories: cutting class at the local Dunkin' Donuts, late night arcade runs with pockets full of quarters, and a classmate's first new car. I'll never forget that low-cost Hyundai Excel, the only option being a cassette deck to play the...

After two consecutive days of old Junkyard Find Dodges, we might as well see yet another one. It's a sign of how many 60s Chrysler A-bodies were manufactured (and how rugged they were) that you see more of them in the junkyard today than you do, say, 20-year-old Hyundai Excels. This one is a bit new to have the pushbutton shifter, but it's still packed with parts that will no doubt live on in another...

In the late 1980s, when I helped my then-teenage daughter buy a used Hyundai Excel as a first vehicle, those cars were selling new for about $4,000.

Back in '87, your options for the crappiest possible dirt-cheap subcompact boiled down to two choices: Hyundai Excel or Yugo. While that's sort of like choosing between Syngman Rhee or Josip Broz as your homeowners-association president, we've got to go with the early Excel, which was distinctly citrus-flavored but would manage to sputter along for a couple years longer than the Yugo. Here's a Canadian...

Back in 1990, when you lined up for a drag race against the likes of the Toyota Tercel and Hyundai Excel, you needed something serious . Like f'rexample, a Subaru Justy, equipped with continuously variable tranny action! And if that hot tranny action ain't enough for you, sport, the orange-suited thugs from the Subie Mafia will tie you up and stuff you in the behind the wheel with but one leg and...
