Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing Pardon my grammar, but wow—what a car: It goes about a zillion miles an hour, looks tougher than jailhouse steak and has explosive bolts in the doors, but before getting to the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing, if I may, a nod to the old (1955-1957) Gullwing. Some years ago I drove a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing in the Mille Miglia, the 1,000-mile road rally...

Dan’s post about the controversial sale of cars from the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum prompts me to mention this 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL coupe, which sold at RM’s Monterey auction this August. The car had been in the possession of its original owner, a Robert Orr, until 2005, when it was donated to the museum. The [...]

Another iconic vehicle is about to be reborn and brought into the 21st century. This time it is the Mercedes-Benz 300SL that is getting the make-over treatment (that’s the car with the batman-esque doors to you and me, or Gull-wings as they are known in the car business). This beautiful badboy, first introduced to the roads in 1954, is to be modified by Arturo Alonso and his company, Gullwing...

Filed under: Wheels , Auctions Talk about a troubled history. The Auto Union Type D racer from 1938 remains one of the most controversial cars in automotive history. Adolf Hitler sponsored its development as a rolling example of Germany's superiority, but after the war the few examples made largely disappeared. Two years ago, one such example resurfaced and was expected to set records at auction,...

Summer 2005, my plans for a Vintage Car Rally Vacation evaporate as my funds allocated for the purpose are vacuumed out of my wallet rebuilding an very poorly rebuilt engine. What started as an odd knock became a horror show as my fussy ex-pat Yorkshireman mechanic in Chilliwack, B.C. removed the head and found the forensic remains of a car-related massacre not seen since Pol Pot rode around in his...

There is a current move by Mercedes-Benz to revive the Gullwing as seen in its latest SLS AMG supercar and a highly-awaited hybrid SL version coming to join the lineup. Revival implies a penchant for the original, and that could be the reason why Nigo ordered AMG to produce a copy powered by a 6.0-liter V8.
