LONDON - Campaign today unveiled its selection of the worst TV ads of 2008. 1 Gillette 2 Specsavers 3 Renault 4 Warburtons 5 Country Life 6 Kellogg 7 Orangina 8 Premier Inn 9 Samsung 10 DFS The question is: What actually makes these adverts the worst? The reason we ask the question is that we remember these adverts - because they were so bad! Of the [...]

The medieval cathedrals of France were an attempt to re-create the mind of God When I was ten, my mother packed my two siblings and me into our creaking Renault 4 and took us on a drive across France. The trip's primary purpose was didactic: we were to be inducted into the country's architectural glories, and in particular its Gothic cathedrals. This being France, however, food inevitably played a...

The trouble with the web is that you can find yourself going off at tangents finding connections that take you along way from your starting point. I'll start from the end and work back. Red Dwarf' is a cult comedy programme on TV made a fair few years ago that I find quite amusing (a sci-fi based adventure of one bloke, a hologram, a cat - that evolves near-human - and a robotic domestic servant and...

We’ve heard some suggest that Suzuki ’s Japanese-market Lapin (and the badge-engineered Mazda Spiano) were “retro-styled,” but until we saw DAMD ’s take on the boxy kei car. With a few tweaks here and there, the tuner’s Ancel Lapin bears a remarkable resemblance to the classic Renault 4 hatchback. We’ll give DAMD credit - they could have just slapped on a Renault grille and called it quits, but the...

It's always fun finding some flimsy-yet-cool factory hot-rod parked on the street of a big crazy city (say, a Cosworth Vega in New York City), and a French factory hot rod is even better. That's why it was fortunate for us that Project Car Hell Poster Child Franzouse had his cellphone camera ready when he stumbled across this Renault 4TL in Paris. We like to imagine the ghost of Gervaise Macquart...

Japanese consumers just love classic European minis. In fact they love them so much that they have created replica kits for about every famous Euro mini that you can think of. At this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon, the Japanese tuning firm “DAMD” presented a Renault replica 4L kit for use on the Suzuki Lapin mini (a JDM retro-looking kei hatch). The 4L which is pronounced "Quatrelle" in French, was Renault's...

Even if you've never bought a car from eBay Motors, most probably you will have visited the site searching for one. We’ve spent many hours on eBay Motors and we’ve found a whole bunch of interesting cars – the latter being the Subaru powered Renault 4CV Drag Car. Well now eBay has launched the fully re-designed Motors 2.0 site (click here). Our friend Stu Holdren from Edelman Interactive

The 4CV was Renault's answer to the original VW Beetle and it was built from 1946 to 1961. And even though Renault built a racing car based on the 4CV in collaboration with the Alpine company, the Alpine A-106, that car is nowhere near as radical as this 1957 example that's for sale on e-Bay. The partially-finished project has been modified for drag racing competition and it is equipped with a

An Alpine it certainly ain't, but this partially-finished project looks as if it could offer some French fun. Currently on eBay is a Renault 4CV that's been modified and built for drag racing competition - notably by adding a 2.0-liter Subaru boxer-four and twin turbochargers. Although it's built for the strip (including a sight-window in the floorboards for the occasional wheelie), we can't help...

People and Technology We’ve got two problems. We’re Drogheda based and so have an 041 instead of an 01 number. People still have a hangup about calling out of their area code (maybe goes back to the old Dept of Posts and Telegraph Days, if you're old enough to remember the old Orange Renault 4 Vans). We’re often out of [...]

Apparently the staff at Renault's ad agency in '66 was gobbling near-lethal quantities of Sandoz Delysid; there's no other sensible explanation for this brain-damaging Renault 4 ad for the French African market. The crypto-psychedelic go-go music... the jittery animated logo... the maddening echoing chorus: Une voiture de ville! Ville ville ville ville! Une voiture de brousse! Brousse brousse brousse...
