The Elantra Touring is actually more closely related to the Europe-only Kia cee'd than to its non-Touring Elantra namesake. It does share the Elantra's 2.0 liter four cylinder and transmission choices (a four-speed automatic or, as my test car featured, a five-speed manual), but no body panels at all. Actually, my first impression of the car was that it combined the 2003-2007 Honda Accord's front end...

In 2008, Toyota Motors paired up with Saatchi & Saatchi Los Angeles to release Your Other You , an advertising campaign promoting the Toyota Matrix. Targeting male twentysomethings, the campaign crafted an elaborate transmedia prank experience to overcome the demographic’s strong aversion to advertising and corporations. Saatchi’s creative director told OMMA Magazine that the campaign...

In addition to the social engineering angle of datamining your answers to online quizzes for password and identity theft, there's the terror angle of corporate stalkers you invite yourself: "Amber Duick...received e-mails for five days from a fictitious man called Sebastian Bowler, from England, who said he was on the run from the law, knew her and where she lived, and was coming to her home...

Toyota marketing created some kind of ill-conceived alternate reality game whose premise was that you were being stalked by an unhinged criminal who sent you threatening emails saying that he was coming to your house, backstopped by things like MySpace profiles and even angry bills from hotels he trashed on the way, having given your name as the payment contact. A woman didn't realize that these were...

ABC News is reporting that a California woman is suing Toyota for $10 million for sending her email that appeared to be from a criminal stalker. The woman claims the emails terrified her to the point that she suffered sleeplessness, poor work performance, etc. Toyota says the ruse was part of a marketing campaign for the Toyota Matrix.

If you thought someone was stalking you, wouldn't you want to buy a Toyota Matrix? A bizarre " terror marketing campaign " for the vehicle, produced by Saatchi & Saatchi Los Angeles, harassed consumers via personalized e-mails. One target is taking the companies to court. Last year, Amber Duick received a series of nine e-mails from a fictitious character dreamed up by the campaign (complete...

We have talked a lot about the Car Allowance Rebate System , more popularly known as the "Cash for Clunkers" program but we really haven't talked about fuel economy since Colleen posted about President Obama's proposal for stricter fuel economy standards . Today, cars must average 27.5 miles per gallon and light trucks must average 23.1 miles per gallon. A couple of weeks ago, the President...

On Saturday, September 26th, I woke up early at my parents’ place, showered, dressed, and jumped in my old car — the ‘08 Toyota Matrix I’d bought new in November ‘07 and sold to my Dad the following July after moving to DC — and ran some errands: I went to Target, and PetSmart, and [...]

Remember the prank-based Toyota Matrix marketing from last year? Amber Duik sure does. She's suing Saatchi, Toyota's out-going ad agency, after their "pranks" made her believe a criminal and his pit bull were heading for her house. We signed ourselves up for the gag, but received absolutely none of this kind of prank action, at least none that we knew of. Such was no the case with Ms. Duik,...
