OK, fine, we know the official rules state that "added structural elements which extend past the original bodywork line" aren't allowed in the 24 Hours Of LeMons, but how could anyone be against this kind of safety enhancement? Actually, that display is the result of a game of Volvo 240 Musical Chairs, in which you take one Volvo race car , the free parts car obtained to help build the race car, and...

2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon Another surprise Cadillac breaks cover, and we find ourselves more than a little smitten. I grew up in a wagon. My mom had an '85 Volvo 240 DL when I was little - yes, that shows you just how old I am, or alternately, just how old I'm not - and one of my first memories involves staring out a side window and wondering why in blue blazes my parents couldn't have bought...

Today we bade farewell to an old friend, our 20 year old Volvo 240DL. It was an excellent, reliable car right to the end. It looked great due to the factory rust-proofing and still averaged 20 miles to the gallon. I’d thought (and hoped) that it would last forever or as nearly [...]

Both of these pictures were sent in by listeners to the show - the first by Kirk Hargett over in the USA, showing the full extent of camper van extremism, and the second by Ewen Cameron, who has a vision for a Volvo 240 4X4, and the skills to at least come up with a picture of what it might look like...

Best buy from eBay so far, the old Volvo 240 Torslanda SAILED through its MOT and is now ready for James to learn to drive in...it's a primitive old beast but the turning circle is smaller than anything else on the road and good grief, it's tough. According to Steve Woodward, formerly of Hampshire Police, it's also the best police traffic car ever. £390. Now, all I've got to do is get him insured...

If you potential Volvo 240 racers want to see a good reason for relocating the fuel filler on your cars, just take a look at the photo above. Yes, that's a Volvo 245 that got bashed in the right rear during a 2006 24 Hours of LeMons race, and that scary gasoline-filled balloon hanging from the fuel filler area is a latex glove ziptied over the end of the busted-off filler tube. We can thank Ecurie...

I had meant to put more Volvo 240s in this series, since the island is full of good examples (and, besides, I'm racing one next month). But somehow a few months have gone by since the last one , so here's a somewhat earlier example I found parked near the '82 Mercedes-Benz 380SL . And yes, I noticed that '79 Civic across the street while I was shooting this Volvo; don't worry, Honda fans, I shot it...

Now that the 24 Hours of LeMons shit-talking has begun , I find it necessary to present some more evidence to show that the V8-ified Volvo 240 is Your Best Race Car Value, even though it means giving away some tricks to our real competition (i.e., the other teams driving Swedish steel). You see, some teams are coming up with this crazy talk about how they've got the best bang-for-buck with their Cavaliers...

Windsor, Ontario-based Schweppes has given us the Volvo 240Chero and the Forward Control Land Rover , and now he's found what appears to be the least rusty 35-year-old street-driven car in all of Canada. Make the jump to read Schweppes' description of this 1973 Mercedes-Benz 250C. I realize that I have a ways to go before I catch up with Kitt , but here is another DOTS bonus vehicle for you from Windsor,...

We saw a Volvo 240Chero not long ago, and a very sanitary job it was. But say you want a Volvo cartruck and don't want to spend the kind of money that gets you something that looks like it came that way from Göteborg- what then? Why, scrape together $499 and buy this '87 Volvo 740 Turbo that's already had Step One (of about 50 steps) in the -chero-izing process performed! Hmmm... under $500... turbocharging...

As we saw a while back, the onslaught of the all-conquering Toyota Prius has been booting hundreds of once-cherished East Bay Volvo 240s into the local wrecking yards. In some ways it's a shame for such well-built machines to be cast aside like that, but it's a boon to those of us who want to build race cars out of them . One interesting feature of the Volvo 240 is its very distinctive aluminum bumpers,...

As we get closer to finding out whether or not the 24 Hours of LeMons overlords have accepted our 302-powered Volvo 240 for the Altamont race, we need to start preparing for roll cage installation. That means getting rid of the nightmarish tar-based insulation that those fiends in Göteborg applied all over the floorpan of our car. It's hard as iron, yet gums up any tool you use against it with a primeval...

The Saab-loving conspiracy theorists still seem to think I've purposely excluded their favorite cars from this series; after all, in a city where there seems to be a Volvo 240 for every five citizens, wouldn't you expect to see a lot of Saabs as well? Well, no; in these parts, a Volvo in front of your house 25 years ago made a statement about your beliefs, while a Saab just said, uh... well, that...

It fits just fine! When you last saw it , our quest to build a car for the 24 Hours of LeMons race was at the "tear stuff out of the car" phase . Now we're at the point at which we can think about getting our 200,000-mile 302 into the Volvo's engine compartment. The Chevy or Ford V8 in a Volvo 200 series is a fairly common swap , so we figured it wouldn't be too tough... but we all breathed a sigh...
