It’s 4 p.m., and that means it’s time to play Two for Eight. We just asked ten restaurants the best time they could squeeze a couple in for dinner; you need only make your chosen reservation. Papa Tom Colicchio, a little Colichio, and Mario Batali at a screening of 'Fantastic Mr. Fox.' At Tribeca Cinemas yesterday, Mario Batali was impressed with his own cameo in Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox . Batali played Rabbit, a cook, and had two lines. "Wes called me out of the blue and said, 'Listen, do you want to do this?' And two weeks later we were taping it," the chef told us...

Remember the Iconoclast lovefest between Michael Stipe and Mario Batali? Well, American Express is offering up something similar, live and in person. On December 9 at Craftsteak , John Legend will perform and then Tom Colicchio will join him for a conversation about creative collaboration, food and wine, and all that good stuff. It all happens over a dinner “co-created” by Legend and Colicchio....
Clockwise from top: Shake Shack, Txikito, and the Spotted Pig. [Photographs: Robyn Lee] Time Out: New York asked nine prominent food-lovers in the city—including Frank Bruni, Tom Colicchio, Josh Capon (People's Choice Award winner from this year's Burger Bash),...
WARNING: This post contains Top Chef spoilers, albeit from last week's episode. Read no further if you are behind on this season. Zaytinya's Mike Isabella heard those fateful words, “please pack your knives and go” on last week’s episode of Top Chef . The chefs were brought to host Tom Colicchio’s Craftsteak kitchen to ogle and plan a dish using the choicest cuts of meat in...
Last week, as the scrubbed and smirking mugs of Tom Colicchio and Padma Lakshmi continued to advertise Top Chef ’s sixth season in Vegas all over town, Bravo announced an open casting call for the series’ latest iteration, Top Chef: Just Desserts , on Sunday, Nov. 8, at Craftsteak. “It’s about time!” exclaimed Zak Miller, pastry chef at Kefi, Gus & Gabriel and Anthos...

Natalie Portman guest judged on this week's "Top Chef." The challenge was for the chefs to cook vegetarian food, as Portman does not eat meat. When one contestant's food came out with a garlic puff, Padma likened it to a "little prick" on her tongue. With laughter and back and forth, judge Tom Colicchio summed it up as "from a little prick to big in your mouth." The whole...
I know we just talked about Natalie Portman yesterday , but let's face it, she's kinda magical. How magical? Enough to make a steakhouse go vegetarian—at least for one night. It all went down on last night's episode of Top Chef . (Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen it yet.) Like my fellow PETA Files blogger, Missy—who gave us a heads-up about this treat back in July—I'm...
As I blogged on Monday, this week’s Top Chef featured Natalie Portman as a guest judge and thus I very excited that it would most likely be a vegetarian challenge! I love Top Chef but I do wish they cooked more dishes I could eat (I’m a 8+ year vegetarian) and I was looking forward to seeing the best chefs in the competition (there are only 7 left!) make some awesome vegetable dishes....
First off, I am not a vegetarian. I've flirted with vegetarianism at certain points in my life (perhaps, most notably, a reaction to dining hall food at university), but I've been a blissfully happy carnivore for the majority of my life and I don't see that changing anytime soon. That said, vegetarians often get a raw deal in restaurants and sometimes have to deal with chefs that don't understand how...
This week's Top Chef, taped before Padma Lakshmi got preggers, guest star this week Natalie Portman. They competing chefs are told that they'll be cooking dinner for the judges at Tom Colicchio's CraftSteak at the MGM Grand. They go nuts pulling out cuts of meat. Then and only then, they're told that Portman's a vegetarian and that's what they have to cook. This is not a show known for sex or double...
Filed under: OpEd , Celebrities , Episode Reviews , Top Chef (S06E10) After last week's restaurant wars, which I found really disappointing, I was hoping for a really tough challenge tonight. As Hemal guessed , having Natalie Portman as a guest judge did turn this main competition into a vegetarian duel. Oooh, yum. Vegetables. More about the kale and mushrooms after the jump. The quick fire was a...

A while back, a good month before the “bacon fat candle” hit the scene, we brought word that Garrett Oliver, brewmaster at the soon-to-expand Brooklyn Brewery , had created bacon beer. It was taunting and daunting enough that some of the precious few 21 cases of so-called Reinschweinsgebot were being squandered on a $350 dinner at Per Se , but now the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tells...
Now this is "must See TV"! Vegan actress Natalie Portman will create quite a challenge for the meat-obsessed chefs competing on BravoTV's Top Chef , season 6 Las Vegas. On tonight's episode, apparently the gang of contestants is brought to Tom Colicchio's restaurant Craftsteak Vegas and shown piles of meat ingredients. They get excited *sigh*. The twist comes when the person they will be...
