Visitors to Napa Valley, even those on their first trip, have a hard time missing the Grgich Hills winery, which sits prominently on the west side of Highway 29, its flower beds almost pushed right up against the edge of the blacktop. Of course, when the winery was established in the late 1970s there was a lot less traffic on that same highway, and founder Miljenko "Mike" Grgich was a young...

Reminder that this month's Virtual Tasting will take place on Monday November 23rd. Read about it here . Well folks, it’s time once again to make some Thanksgiving wine recommendations. Marcus and Melissa at EAT & DRINK In The Northwest covered rosés in their post earlier this month , so I will focus here on a few whites and light bodied reds. In terms of white wines my personal preferences...

In the interest of doing what I say on the tin, I thought it would be useful to highlight how Bordeaux fared during the Wine Future conference in Rioja. For a start, there were very few Bordelais winemakers there. Among the non-speakers, I saw Jean Charles Cazes, and reportedly Bernard Magrez was there, although I didn’t see him personally (would love to hear what he took away from the two days...

Petrus, Romanee-Conti, Chateau d'Yquem -- wines coveted by connoisseurs, and targeted by counterfeiters. According to French wine professionals, a handful of rare and fine wines face the same threat from fraud as luxury handbags and designer sunglasses. Trafficking in fake wine has "always existed a little, but it's definitely amplified with the rising prices of fine wines", said Sylvain...

This is one of those wines that I live for. The kind that begins with an unknown bottle thrust in front of me by a friend with a twinkle in their eye, and ends with a profound memory of taste that becomes one of those moments that wine lovers cherish. Such wines are not common, at least not for me, but they are what keep me passionate about drinking and writing and enjoying the world of wine. Occasionally...

Nose: inky salt water taffy, tar, lush blackberry Palate: juicy macerated berries, pepper, firm acid core with tannins that play at the edges. Finish: more juicy dark berries with cedar notes, anise at the back of a very long finish. Overall: Young and juicy. This will continue to become more and more complex as it matures and the flavors settle. I was out at a very fancy restaurant on business where...

I was invited for a dinner and tasting by the owner of Chateau Faugères, Silvio Denz, for 14 of his friends including Franz Wermuth, Peter Sisseck, etc… Old, very old wines were served to celebrate the opening of the new cellar and a promising 2009 vintage. The meal was prepared by the caterer who also works for La Dominique : Amuse-bouches and oysters (Papillon et N°4) Champagne...

When friends called to say I should stop by on Friday night because they'd opened a couple of interesting bottles of Morgon, I figured the least I could do was add a third to the mix. After a wee glass of the Crémant de Loire "Brut Sauvage" NV from Château des Vaults (Domaine du Closel) to whet the whistle, we started off with my contribution to the trio. Morgon (Lot S), Marcel...

Last week I had the pleasure of conducting a Vertical Tasting of both Chateau La Fleur Morange and the Second Wine Mathilde for the ‘Amicitia Per Vimum’ wine society at the Wig and Mitre in Lincoln. They had not come across these lovely wines before and having seen the scores and notes from Robert Parker and Jancis Robinson they were really looking forward to the tasting and certainly weren't...

At a dinner in college I was the one bringing the wine. Since my host was a New Zealander, the New Zealand pinot noir I might have chosen brought thoughts of coals to Newcastle. Instead I went European, choosing a cuvée du Vatican Chateauneuf du Pape. The pope’s ninth chateau is not far from where [...]
