This distinctive Japanese red pine appears in Andy Rutledge’s web book ‘Artistic Foundations of Bonsai Design.’ The original image (left) came from a back issue of Bonsai Today magazine. The black lines on the right hand image were drawn by Andy to illustrate how “the smooth but erratic curves of the trunk are carried over [...]

Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, 95 cm high, around 100 years old, collected in Sweden in 2001, pot by Derek Aspinall the first tow images are as of a couple of weeks ago. After that I cut out some growth on the living crown, took off the jin and peeled the bark at the end a litle to get more of the reddish bark. Now the tree is ready for the Noleanders Trophy. This will be the first serious judged exhibit...

This is a European hornbeam, Carpinus betulus. It was collected in Germany by Wolfgang Kaeflein in 1994. I got it in 1996 as stump with no branches. When I brought it home the guy who was my assistant at that time said in all earnest 'this will never ever become a decent bonsai'. Well, just to prove him wrong I planted it into my growing field and let the top grow freely to thicken the ridiculously...

The Ichiban. Designed by Marco Invernizzi and built by Masakuni. As you may know, Marco is a gifted Western bonsai artist, and Masakuni is the benchmark bonsai tool company. Together they have created a revolutionary new tool for the serious bonsai artist (and the rest of us who practice the art of bonsai). The Ichiban [...]

This is an oriental hornbeam, Carpinus orientalis. It was collected in Italy a couple of years ago.I got it in a trade this summer as a bush. Today I decided to bring it to the next step. Normally this is done in March/April. But we have such nice weather now. Anyway, this is a fat little hornbeam which has great potential. This will become a powerful tree in five to ten years.

This is a linden, Tilia platiphyllos. It was collected in Germany by Wolfgang Kaeflein in 2001. David acquired it and started to work on ti. I inherited it in a trade this summer. Normally I work on such material from March to May. But we are having the warmest November ever with spring-like temperatures. And I can work outside. So I gabe it a go because linden are some of the most hardy deciduous...

I know that hydrangeas are known for huge, showy flowers that probably won't be conducive to good bonsai design, and most hydrangeas have large leaves, etc. that just make them undesirable. The other day, though, I saw some beautiful shrubs for sale half off at the local Home Depot. Turned out they were hydrangea paniculata with leaves about an inch long. They are in 3 gallon nursery pots, and have...

Well, the immediate future anyway! I purchased some seedlings from Matt Ouwinga ( kaedebonsai.com ) and couldn't be happier. He always sends more than you pay for and gives price breaks for larger orders (although his prices are great anyway!) I hope to have some of these ready to start selling in about 5 years or so.

Some of you still read books. We know because we sell them. If you fall into this illustrious (if somewhat aging) group, good times await you. Take a look. Pocket Guide to Bamboos by Ted Jordan Meredith Really nothing about bonsai here, but our guess is some bonsai enthusiast somewhere also appreciates bamboo. And there’s nothing that [...]

This exquisitely designed and rendered porcelain bonsai pot is by one of the Kakiemon line of potters. The article in Bonsai Today 44 doesn’t say which Kakiemon made it, but given the fame of the pot and the way it’s discussed in the article, you might assume it’s by the first Sakaida Kakiemon (17th century).
