Tough Meeting on Abortion Coverage Ban

Ahhh the frustration! Apparently Congressman Ben Chandler's staff disagrees with the hundreds of activists from across the country who an hour ago chanted "no new restrictions!" I just met with two members of his staff and simply asked, "How can a supposedly pro-choice member of Congress vote for the Stupak-Pitts amendment?" They contend that the studies they have read prove Stupak...

Ready to Stop Stupak

I am on my second flight of the day at the moment after leaving my house at 4:30 this morning. I am ready to get to Washington D.C. and join countless other activists to Stop Stupak . I am also ready to ask Kentucky's Congressman Ben Chandler how in the world he can profess to be pro-choice and vote for Stupak. It befuddles the mind, but hopefully I will have my answer by the end of the day.

THEIR VIEW: Capito is right about health reform

Roberts By STEVE ROBERTS CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Rep. Shelley Moore Capito for voting against House Bill 3962, the health insurance "reform" bill that narrowly passed the House of Representatives. The bill, which passed by a razor-thin vote of 220-215, would have serious consequences for small businesses -- increasing taxes and imposing mandates...

Should Dems Be Moore Nervous?

It's been mentioned by a few people, myself included , but it bears repeating: Dems know that if they experience a wave of retirements this year, they're in trouble. In '94, Dems lost 21 seats in which the incumbent decided against seeking another term. That's why DCCC chair Chris Van Hollen has put so much emphasis on keeping incumbents in their races. And he's been largely successful; to date, only...

Dan Lungren Comes Out Strongly Against Fair Election Reforms

If you've been following the Blue America PAC at all, you may already be aware that we've decided that we won't be endorsing any candidates for the House in 2010 unless they are genuinely enthusiastic about passing John Larson's Fair Elections Now Act ( HR 1826 ). We're not asking for some unenforceable pledge; we want nothing less than heartfelt enthusiasm. Right now Larson has 117 co-sponsors from...

The Infamous 53: Same Old Crowd with a Few New Dogs

As you probably know, a group that I have dubbed The Infamous 53 , recently sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi opposing freedom for all Americans to travel to Cuba. Transcripts of the letter were available on the Internet. What was not ready available was the actual names of the 53. An alert reader of Cuba Journal sent to me a PDF file link with the text and the signatures and the names of the 53....

Looking at the Cook Competitive Race Chart.

Looking at the Cook Political Report’s latest competitive race chart is in itself informative - the short version is that of the top 108 competitive races, the following ratios apply: Dem GOP Likely D 45 0 Leans D 23 1 Toss-up D 12 0 Toss-up R 0 3 Leans R 1 8 Likely R 0 15 Total 81 27 …but there’s some interesting things that can be seen with a little sorting. Below is a chart of...

For Cowardly Dems Who Have Considered Betrayal

It's too late for traitors like Ben Chandler who have already voted against the most important legislation of the 21st century; they've already lost re-election in 2010. But for Senate Blue Dogs like Blanche Lincoln, there's still a chance to save themselves. Not by running away from health care reform, but by embracing it. Steve Benen explains the obvious: Blue Dogs are going to lose next year unless...
