Meeting with Representative Kind’s Office

On Monday, my husband Wes and I joined other members of ONE to meet with Brad Smith of Congressman Ron Kind’s staff. Of the nearly 28,000 ONE members in Wisconsin, over 3,000 are in the 3rd Congressional District – a number we are looking to grow! We asked Brad to thank Congressman Kind for being a [...]

The Congressional Healthcare Confusion

Note: This article ran as an opinion piece in the Dunn County News. Confused about the healthcare bill? You’re not alone to be sure. Just take a look at some of our local Midwestern representative’s statements and let your head spin. I’m not even talking of the partisan debate. Take three rural Democratic Congressmen: Collin Peterson (D-MN), Jim Oberstar (D-MN), and our own Ron Kind...

Barrett to decide on run for governor this week

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett will decide by the end of the week whether to get in the race for governor. Democrats have no major candidate in the race to replace Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle, who is not seeking a third term. Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton bowed out of the race last month and U.S. Rep. Ron Kind of La Crosse has declined to run. Those decisions have put more pressure on Barrett to get in the race....

Protection for Species Viability Restored

Yet another Bush-era wildlife regulation has been overturned in the courts . A federal judge has struck down the 2008 forest planning regulations that eliminated a key wildlife protection provision known as “viability”. The Wildlife Viability Requirement of the National Forest Management Act of 1976 provides important protection for the hundreds of bird species that inhabit the 193 million-acre...

What happens if...

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett doesn't run for governor and Congressman Ron Kind doesn't reconsider? The Dems will be in some trouble, yes? Is it time to start a Draft Steve Kagen movement? Green Bay is a critical during a statewide election and Kagen is wealthy enough so that he could catch-up on the fund raising pretty quick. I just don't know if Mayor Barrett is going to run. If he wanted to run, he's...

Obama in Madison, November 4

Well, well, well. Wisconsin Democrats need to pick a candidate to run for governor in 2010. Barbara Lawton bailed, as did Ron Kind. Tom Barrett won't commit. What are the Dems to do? Here he comes to save the day -- OBAMA! He just happens to be planning a visit to Wisconsin next week to talk about education . What a coinky dink! From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel : President Barack Obama is planning...

A sack of oranges or a rubber hose?

Which was Babs Lawton beaten with while blindfolded and tied up in a closet until she agreed to clear the runway for Tom Barrett? Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton announced Monday that she would not run for governor. The decision further complicates the race for governor on the Democratic side. Gov. Jim Doyle has already announced that he would not run for re-election. Lawton's revelation is the third stunning...

WI-Gov: Lawton Won't Run, Will Barrett?

The rumors over the weekend suggested that the White House was exerting behind-the-scenes pressure on Milwaukee mayor and ex-Rep. Tom Barrett to run for Governor, thinking he has the best chance of holding the state for the Democrats, compared with underfunded and not-well-known Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton, the only Dem in the open seat race. (Reportedly, the pressure via Obama originated with current...

Looking at a Bizarre Statewide Analysis

So, the Wisconsin State Journal columnist Scott Milfred has an analysis of the upcoming Wisconsin Governor's race: Dems left with B Team if Barrett bails . There are numerous things wrong with this analysis, that I feel compelled to point out: 1. The article's tone: The whole article speaks in almost absolute certainty. The election is over a year away, a lot can happen between then and now. Anyone...

Barrett says bid for governor will be family decision

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Friday he will have to consult with his family before making any decision on seeking the Democratic Party nomination for governor in 2010. "I continue to work on my job that I love, the job of being the mayor," Barrett said. "And my wife and family and I will sit down and we will have a very private conversation about a very public job in the near future."...

WI Governor Race Updates

As you probably know, Rep. Ron Kind (D) is not in the running for governor Wisconsin. That leaves Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett as the only other speculated candidate on the Democratic-side that I would consider likely and formidable. Some think that Kind's decision not to run makes it more likely Mayor Barrett will get in. Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton, who is announced, is most certainly credible and...

Eyes on Barrett as Kind opts out of governor's race

U.S. Rep. Ron Kind's decision to stay out of the 2010 governor's race came after a poll showed that few Wisconsinites knew him, Democrats said Thursday.
