Elephant death rattle

Shh. If you're really quiet, you may actually hear the sound of the Republican Party coming apart at the seams. On the one hand, you have the effort by moderates trying to revive the virtually extinct New England branch of the party once so honorably represented in Massachusetts by the likes of Edward Brooke, Henry Cabot Lodge, Leverett Saltonstall, John Volpe and Francis Sargent. But not so far away,...

Voice From the Republican Past

Two days after his 90th birthday, Edward Brooke was at the Capitol yesterday to receive the Congressional Gold Medal from President Obama and scold Mitch McConnell for his failure to be bipartisan. Brooke, the first African-American ever elected to the Senate in 1966 as a Republican from Massachusetts, took the occasion to tell his party's leader: “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of...

Something Really Wonderful Occurred at the Capitol Rotunda

This past Monday, Edward Brooke was formally awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. It is the highest honour Congress can bestow. The medal itself was presented by President Obama. It was a rare show of bipartisanship, and putting differences aside to honour a true trailblazer. The law according this medal was actually passed last year, although the ceremony was delayed. You can read the actual law...

Simon Maloy: Does anyone know what NewsBusters is complaining about?

I marvel sometimes at the versatility of the crack bias hunters over at NewsBusters. Even though they've spent the better portions of their careers failing to make sense and embarrassing themselves , they still manage to come up with new and inventive ways to look completely foolish. Take, for example, Brent Baker's latest complaint that ABC World News anchor Charles Gibson "had time to convey...
