The eastern horizon as seen from the southern hemisphere around 7:30 pm local time. Jupiter is just under the "Teapot" of Sagittarius. The inset shows the opposition of Jupiter's Galilean Moons at this time. Callisto and Ganymede should be easily visible in binoculars (click on the image to enl;arge it). Tonight is the Opposition of Jupiter, when this planet is biggest and brightest in the sky. Well,...

Finally, after many days, the sky was clera this morning. Cold, still, with only a little dew, ideal for morning star gazing. I had a quick look at Jupiter (a readily visible disk in binoculars, with Ganymede below it), then when hunting comet Boattini. Boattini was readily visible in binoculars near omicron Eriandius (just up from Rigel). Couldn't see it with the unaided eye, but my eastern horizon...

I've always admired Obama's ambiguous, strangely soothing signature cartouche -- are those furrows on a Kansas farm, or flag stripes so tranquillized they've ceased to wave? Its quietude and noncommittal subliminal suggestiveness make it the perfect emblem for a miraculous...

Howard reports that "[a Federal a]ppeals court says [an] apartment owner can sue Jupiter." As we'll remember, Jupiter had filed to dismiss for failure to join Io and Ganymede as essential parties. Sam Stein thinks McCain has ripped off Obama's slogan and logo (the sunset one, not the one we suggested ). I assumed it was a satirization, myself.

When it comes to the mighty Jupiter - and seeing Jupiter's moons through a small telescope or binoculars - timing is everything. Jupiter's satellites are constantly on the move, and almost any time you observe you'll see at least one. The four largest of Jupiter's moons are known as the Galileans, and go [...]

"Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest." King Solomon , Proverbs 6:6-8 Bees--whether you love them or hate them are an important insect, contributing an enormous amount to our food supply. Without them, many of the foods that we eat (and take for granted) would...

Earth's Oceans My own general view of the Fermi paradox (with the universe so big aliens should have visited by now) is that there is no reason to think that we are that interesting to need a visit instead of remote observation and if they visited more than 5000 years ago then we forgot or were not around. Now science that relates to the Fermi paradox brings word that a deficiency of oxygen and the...

NASA's Cassini spacecraft has discovered evidence that points to the existence of an underground ocean of water and ammonia on Saturn's moon Titan. "We believe that about 100 kilometers (62 miles) beneath the ice and organic-rich surface is an internal ocean of liquid water mixed with ammonia," said Bryan Stiles of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in [...]

Except for some of the harsh, impermanently inhabited and sparsely visited inlands of Kerguélen, there are no places left on Earth to name. Those with a penchant for baptising should look to the priesthood, or take a more literal interest in heaven – there are ever more known worlds out there, and precious little of those [...]

(Hat Tip: Space Pragmatism ) After having successfully launched (and landed) two rovers on Mars, with a third on the way, NASA is readjusting priorities and focusing on the outer gas planets. ( Red Orbit ) However, Griffin referred to a recent evaluation from the US National Research Council which gave NASA an "A" for its ventures to Mars, while it received a "D" for outer planets and a "C" for research...
