Planets approximately the size of Jupiter orbiting close to their star in other systems are often referred to as "Hot Jupiters." It would appear that a new classification is required: Very Hot and Very Fast Jupiters. WASP-12b is an exoplanet, about 50% more massive than Jupiter, orbiting a star (imaginatively called WASP-12) over 800 light [...]
British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, and Barack Obama enjoy some time in the garden. Today Mercury goes direct in Libra , a perfect time for some nice debate, a Libra favorite. The lovely Taurus Moon is back to join the steady Jupiter-Saturn earth trine, continuing smoothly. Good day for some economic chat. The Libra sun is trine Neptune in Aquarius and no wonder I was listening to Chopin accompanying...
Here is closeup of Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, taken by Cassini on an October 9 flyby of the body. Why the close up? Like Jupiter's volcanic Io and Neptune's Triton, Enceladus is notable for its geological activity, as well...
(PhysOrg.com) -- Computer simulations of the atmospheric circulation on Jupiter-like planets around other stars can explain temperature observations of these planets and shed light on the exotic weather experienced by these far-away worlds.

(PhysOrg.com) -- Turbulence generated by thunderstorms can drive the multiple east-west jet streams on the giant planets - Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune - and explain a long-standing conundrum concerning the puzzling differences between the innermost two planets, Jupiter and Saturn, and the outermost two, Uranus and Neptune.
Image Caption: NASA images of Jupiter's moon, Io, (left) Earth (center) and Mars (right), respectively, illustrate worlds with too much, just enough and too little tidal heating to favor life. Internal heating can dramatically affect the suitability of a planet for life. Internal heating produced by tides in Io is so strong the moon undergoes powerful global-scale volcanism. Earth's moderate internal...
My eye on the sky The Moon in Aries opposes Mercury in Libra while they both square Jupiter in Capricorn. These are Cardinal signs and people who don’t pay attention (Elsa) will probably be preachy and controlling. Meantime Venus and Mars are still in Scorpio so there is a definite pull (or thrust) around the crotch. Power struggles abound and money is no doubt part of the equation. Last we have the...
I'm only providing a link to this photo , taken today in the Alameda, as I'm aware that certain family members may boycott this blog if I post it directly. I'm enjoying the new macro lens a lot! I will however post this, simple but pleasing picture of Jupiter and two of its moons, taken as a four second exposure out of my window on Friday night. Note that the 100mm lens does not produce much magnification,...
Some recent science fiction, particularly Saturn's Children, by Charles Stross, offers a bleak assessment of humanity's chances of colonizing the solar system. The choices, from the moon to Mars and possibly Jupiter's moon Europa, are high-radiation, ugly places. So it's not as inspiring as usual to...
What excites me about this research is that most of the exoplanets we've been finding are huge in scale like Jupiter or Saturn. This modeling shows how we might be able to find planets that are the size of...
Shot from a cave in Utah, the Milky Way - 1,000 light years in diameter - and the planet Jupiter (top left) From Daily Mail . The photo looks amazing! It looks like a lunar landscape but this remarkable photograph actually shows our Milky Way and the planet Jupiter in all their glory - viewed from a cave in America's Utah desert. The spiral galaxy, which cannot be seen with the naked eye, was captured...
Seeing Jupiter I forgot to mention a most exciting experience. Whilst waiting to see the sunset on Mauna Loa volcano we got to see Jupiter. One of the rangers had a very powerful telescope and he let us have a look once he had set it up. First focus was on Venus and then on Jupiter. We could see the planet clearly with it's four moons in orbit. Brilliant
Scientists have revealed the sharpest ever image taken of Jupiter from the ground. The incredible image reveals changes in the gas giant's smog-like haze, probably in response to a planet-wide upheaval more than a year ago.
