Writer's Block: Planet's Rights

How do you feel about Pluto's recent demotion? Should it still be a planet? View other answers Pluto is a Kuiper Belt object and no different than the other plutoids - Eris and Makemake. It's always bugged me - being so small and in an irregular orbit. Science is a continual advancement and as we find new and better ways to classify things we should.

Astrology Tonight (US) - Moon In Pisces

My eye on the sky Many (most) have had a very bumpy ride these last few days. The Moon in Pisces has cleared Uranus but now heads into a square with Pluto. Pluto! Caltech astronomer has a blog

I've been following Mike Brown's Planets , an astronomy blog started by Mike Brown who is an astronomer at Caltech. For those of you who don't know him, he is the dude whose discovery of Eris led to the demotion of Pluto from a real planet to a dwarf planet. Yup, Pluto fans, go ahead and send him your hate mails. In one of his entries, he talks about how astronomers give their new discoveries a name....

Unifying Concepts and Language

Astronomy is filled with ideas that share too many different names. For instance, an Quasar is also a QSO is also an Active Galactic Nuclei. In our solar system, where we once had a bunch of specific objects, we now have terrestrial planets, gaseous planets, asteroids, and icy bodies (and 1 star too). As science [...]

Pluto's Not A Planet Anymore, Either

I sit here in my darkened room. My room for just a few more hours. I am finishing my stint as a fourth grade teacher today after five years. The good news is that I won't be going far. I will be heading upstairs to become the Computer Teacher. This won't be a huge stretch, since I have already done that job before. The computer lab has moved across the hall, but it's pretty much how I remember it....
