I just spent some time listening to an acquaintance talking about his days as a student at MIT and as a grad student at Harvard in the early 1950’s. He had Geoff Wilkinson for inorganic chemistry at MIT as an undergrad and later did his PhD with Wilkinson at Harvard. Wilkinson did radiochemistry in the Manhattan Project prior to joining [...]

Dr. Warfield Teague is retiring this year, which makes me feel old. He was one of the professors who helped make me what I am today – in his case, partly by keeping me out of his chosen field of inorganic chemistry. It was a good move on his part; I’d surely have blown something up good and thoroughly when I got to grad school, such are the opportunities in that area. Unfortunately for both him and...

Now that I am doing a fair amount of inorganic synthesis and preparation of metal coordination complexes, I look back to my undergraduate education and wish that it had been somewhat different. In my undergrad time in the early 80’s, inorganic texts were heavy in theoretical concepts- molecular spectroscopy, ligand field theory, and group theory. It made [...]

The most common form of uranium in solution is notoriously unreactive, limiting the use of the element. But interactions of this complex with potassium ions unleash a potentially rich seam of unexpected chemistry

Most metal ions will coordinate some electron-rich species in solution - water is a common suspect. Many other things can be hung off of certain metals, however, and an entire field and fame and fortune are available to those who manage to make something useful involving a metal. "Inorganic chemistry" is really a field unto itself - organic and biochemists make use of it, but we don't really understand...
