Doug Mathis has been put on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. Luis Mendoza has been called up to take his place. Interesting call up. I didn't realize Mathis was hurting. And I would have thought that Kam Loe would have been more likely to be called up, for a bullpen role, than Mendoza, who has been starting all year.

Right-hander Brandon McCarthy (right forearm inflammation) has been on the DL since spring training, Jason Jennings made six starts before season-ending elbow surgery, and rookies A.J. Murray (left rotator cuff strain) and Doug Mathis (right shoulder inflammation) are also on the DL. Kevin Millwood had a 15-day DL stay in May because of a right groin strain.

The Rangers website has an item up on Luis Mendoza and Kason Gabbard. Gabbard is getting called up on Saturday to take over for Doug Mathis in the rotation. Mathis is supposedly heading back to the bullpen, but they are going to have to send someone down to make room for Gabbard, and unless they option Josh Rupe, Mathis would seem to be the most likely candidate. There's...

No Josh Hamilton. No Michael Young. Doug Mathis, one of the American League’s more volatile pitchers through the first month of his big league career, squaring off against the respectable Matt Garza on a suffocatingly warm Sunday afternoon at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. And yet, somehow, a tremendously satisfying victory, salvaging at least one win from an [...]
