It was a run that would have brought him a medal at last year's world championships in Osaka, but Haile Gebrselassie (pictured right) was not being so presumptuous. Before the start of the FBK Games in the Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadium here on Saturday, Haile Gebrselassie was paraded around the track in an open-top convertible with the Indiana Jones theme tune blaring over the public address system. When he reappeared for the 10,000 metres, there was no fedora or bullwhip, but the Ethiopian athlete still accomplished his against-the-odds mission.

It takes quite some performance to become the African star of the show when those Ethiopian kings of distance running, Kenenisa Bekele and Haile Gebrselassie, happen to be included on the bill. Few of the crowd at the opening IAAF Grand Prix of the European season would have even heard of Pamela Jelimo when they arrived at the Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadium here in the eastern Netherlands yesterday....
