Tuesday 24 November 2009

I had some exciting news yesterday: I won a prize in Friday’s raffle for Children in Need! And the prize was… a signed photograph of Simon Cowell! When Jane Scott presented this to me with all due pomp I was reminded of the High Court Judge in the 1960s who was reported to have said in court, ‘and who, pray, are the Beatles'’, as I’ve never seen Simon Cowell myself. But...

Time trial

For the past 18 months, other than when I have been injured (which is actually a big chunk of it!) I have been training in the morning. When I am not training, I struggle to answer my own question of how I fit it in as the time seems to go just as quickly without training. Yesterday morning I planned another "longest run since the London Marathon" of around 19 miles. I had to be in Port Soderick...

Starting to ramp up now

Well its that time that all elite athletes dread - the Saturday after the Friday night. Naturally I've not been on the lash because ... well because I am elite! Plus Ernie's van broke down last night and he couldn't pick me up from the kebab wagon, so I did without the usual Friday night half keg. Instead I thought I'd try and pick up some tips from a contemporary of mine and watched Trevor Wogan on...

At the end of the day it has to be fun

As I tried to leave my half read pile of newspapers and half full bottle of wine at around 9 pm last night I tried to find the motivation to update the website. One thing I try to do with the website is to produce a feature when you are not expecting it. I particularly like to publicise events a long time in the future because I believe it is far more effective than last minute plugs and reminders...

Grey areas leave room for grey training

Recent consultations have reminded me about the consequences of setting goals. It seems we all want specific goals but are only willing to use the scientific approach if it fits with our lifestyles. If the goal is specific then the training programme needs to reflect it. What is evident in recent months, everyone is employing the in depth science available but not complimenting it with the necessary...

My Week: Romola Garai

The star of Emma reflects on love, marriage and why her two-year-old nephew is obsessed with cranes "Love is at the root of everything good that has ever happened and will happen." This phrase swam into focus as I moved up the escalator at Oxford Circus tube on Tuesday morning on my way to put myself "on tape" for a part in Spider-Man 4 . This is the acting equivalent of the London...

Hannah Waterman unveils her slimline new figure... then launches a fitness DVD

Actress Hannah Waterman is the latest to join the fitness DVD bandwagon, after shedding two and a half stone and five dress sizes on a strict diet and exercise plan. She says: 'I hope my new fitness DVD Body Blitz shows people what I’ve learnt through my trainers. It’s hardcore, not a dancing-around-your-handbag routine! It’s about healthiness, not weight.' She says: 'Smoking’s definitely aged my skin....
