Heading into this winter, with a new general manager almost certainly coming onboard to replace the fired Bill Bavasi, it's doubtful Jim Riggleman has shown enough to be retained. Then again, it's debatable whether he ever could have shown enough.

Tuesday night offered an indicator that Jim Riggleman's team isn't packing it in. The Mariners ended a 12-game losing streak and avoided their 100th loss of the season by rallying from a 6-2 deficit to beat the Angels 9-6 at Safeco Field.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Jim Riggleman has a modest proposal. The Mariners manager doesn't begrudge young players their chance to get a taste of the major leagues with baseball's September roster expansion. But he thinks there should be a way to keep it from altering the way some of the most important games of the season are played.

Carlos Silva is going on the DL with right elbow alibitis. Says Jim Riggleman : As for Silva, Riggleman said he had felt some elbow pain in his bullpen session two starts ago, but didn't say anthing until after he got shelled yesterday. The plan is to rest Silva and bring him back in September. I suppose it would be nice for him to finish this season with some positive results to take into next year....
