I'm Starting A New Religion Dedicated To Dayton Moore

Its practitioners will read trade rumors regarding the Kansas City Royals and pray to a statue of Dayton Moore that the real life version will make it come true. I presume that based on this rumor , there will be a lot of worshipers. Moore arrives today in Chicago for the annual GM meetings, which typically set the groundwork for possible trades. The meetings run through Wednesday, but the hot stove...

WIndow shopping the 2010 Free Agent Class

Below is the table of most of the available free agents, I've added a column of interest. I have no idea who Ned may be targeting. We know we need a 2nd baseman to replace Hudson/Bellaird, someone in the rotation to replace Wolf, possibly a bullpen piece. Tepid interest for me means that I'd like to have that player on the Dodgers , but that I expect the price to be more then I would like the Dodgers...

Questions about Analyzing Defense

I've been looking at Alberto Callaspo 's UZR numbers and I've got some questions about how to use UZR to project for the coming year. Fangraphs has been reviewing the best fielders from 07-09--pointing out that one season of UZR is equivalent to about 1/3 season of batting (in other words, it takes 3 seasons of UZR to have a good grasp on a players ability. Last year Callaspo was not good (-7.3), in...

One Fan's Vision for the Royals

I've had over a month off from the Royals now and have been mulling over some ideas. This is my vision for the Royals in the upcoming 2010 season. Bear with me if you're bored and/or interested in one fans ideal vision for his cherished franchise. 1B- Mike Jacobs / Billy Butler Obviously Billy Butler is the man. He had a fantastic age 23 season with 50+ doubles. Its quite possible that a few of those...

2010 Hitters/Fielders - Snapshot of the roster

Similar to the 2010 Relievers post from several days ago, this is meant to present a snapshot of who remains on the roster, can we jettison some dead weight, and are there any holes to be filled? The particulars about how many batters the team keeps on the 25-man and how many infielders/outfielders/Teahen-Bloomquist-IF/OF hybrids are kept will have a factor in the final roster (please allow some leeway...

Worst Fielders of 2009

That is, relative to position, and with the warning that these are imprecise ratings, not the final word, and that multi-year data, if available, must be used to determine who really is a good or bad fielder, preferably supplemented with scouting information. These ratings measure range and reliability only, and do not include an outfielder's throwing or an infielder's proficiency at the double play....

Royal's Strike Zone Judgement

Yesterday at Beyond the Box Score I wanted to see if Vladimir Guerrero was able to determine if a pitch was out of the strike zone and the results. The only person I could think of with worse strike zone judgement was Miguel Olivo . I ran the same numbers for Olivo and a few other Royals . For my strike zone, I used -1.2 and 1.2 for the x dimension and 1.5 to 3.5 for the y dimension. For the expanded...

Your offseason forecast: not so good, with a chance of frustration

(Thanks for sticking with us here at Ball Star. I'll have some Chiefs and/or Big 12 football thoughts on UFR soon, but wanted to get this up first.) There are any number of ways to point out just how bad the Royals are. Their season was disappointing enough that everyone's performance can be criticized*, everyone's security questioned. * Zack Greinke, Billy Butler, David DeJesus and Joakim Soria are...

Fantasy Baseball: 2010 AL SS dynasty/keeper rankings.

More photos » by Bill Kostroun - AP Browse more photos » SS in the AL is pretty tough and I kinda feel sorry for you guys if you are stuck with some sketchy guys later on. Since it's a little thin, I'm not going to do big write-ups for these guys. I highly doubt these players will make or break your team. 1.
