An emerging scenario has Getz replacing Callaspo as the starting second baseman, with veteran Willie Bloomquist available if Getz, a left-handed hitter, struggles against left-handed pitchers. Fields would become the starting third baseman, with Alex Gordon shifting to first base and Billy Butler drawing increased duty as the designated hitter. A lefty-righty platoon could develop since Fields has...

Royals second baseman Alberto Callaspo fell five days short of qualifying for arbitration under the labor agreement’s super-2 provision. That figures to cost him several hundred thousands of dollars. Third baseman Alex Gordon, as expected, was one of 10 players who qualified for arbitration under the provision. The list was announced Wednesday.

Links for a busy Wednesday, as writers, agents, and GMs catch their flights out of O'Hare... The Royals are committed to Alex Gordon as their third baseman despite acquiring Josh Fields, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Fields instead could play left field in the event David DeJesus is traded. DeJesus' name popped up in our left field trade market post. Rosenthal and Morosi...

Athletics general manager Billy Beane is looking at possible third base acquisitions, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The A's face uncertainty with hot corner options Eric Chavez, Adam Kennedy, and Brett Wallace. Slusser says the A's are emphasizing youth and "unlikely to spend much money on free agents." So you have to question my earlier guesses that the A's will...

Happy trails, Pete: Phils decline Feliz's $5 million option Per Scott Lauber from the Wilmington News-Journal . Probably a good decision by the organization. Fangraphs had Feliz providing $12.4 million in value over the past two years (on an $8.5 million contract), but nearly all of that came from his glove work, which had been slipping a bit in recent years. The nostalgic among us will remember Feliz...

Decent AAA LOOGY (Tyler Norrick?) and hazy AA pitching prospect (???) for Jeremy Hermida would have been an interesting play for these Cardinals...

Similar to the 2010 Relievers post from several days ago, this is meant to present a snapshot of who remains on the roster, can we jettison some dead weight, and are there any holes to be filled? The particulars about how many batters the team keeps on the 25-man and how many infielders/outfielders/Teahen-Bloomquist-IF/OF hybrids are kept will have a factor in the final roster (please allow some leeway...

Yesterday at Beyond the Box Score I wanted to see if Vladimir Guerrero was able to determine if a pitch was out of the strike zone and the results. The only person I could think of with worse strike zone judgement was Miguel Olivo . I ran the same numbers for Olivo and a few other Royals . For my strike zone, I used -1.2 and 1.2 for the x dimension and 1.5 to 3.5 for the y dimension. For the expanded...

From Goldstein's chat today: newsense (DC) : What is the role of AAA in player development? It seems pretty clear that AA is used for player development while AAA is for spare parts but AAA is also a place where many players have at least one MLBplus level skill that could reveal a hole in a prospect's game. Kevin Goldstein : AAA can be a great place for young hitters, as so many of those 'extra guys'...

(Some changes are coming to this blog, with the merciful end of the Royals season. We'll have an explanation later today or early tomorrow. You won't be rid of my bad humor and rambling blog posts, it'll just be different, and, well, check back later today or tomorrow. In the meantime, (at least) one more Royals thought. Also, this link has nothing to do with the Royals or baseball, but if you're a...

I'm not judging, I'm just asking. They both came up to unbelievable hype and never turned into the players that management envisioned when they were called up. To be fair, I don't know if the expectations were reasonable for either man. Actually, in fact, they definitely weren't. At least when Hurdle came up, he wasn't anointed the franchise's savior like Alex was. Clearly, neither guy was the 'answer'...

MINNEAPOLIS | Third baseman Alex Gordon offered just the barest hint of satisfaction Saturday afternoon following his two-run homer against José Mijaresin a 5-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins. It was a lefty vs. lefty, he said of his 412-foot bomb. And they think I can't hit lefties.
