2005 Upper Deck

Here's my first 2005 Upper Deck pack, purchased as part of a repack box sometime in the past couple of months. Some of the less interesting stuff that I open tends to sit around for awhile, and I'd probably say that this fits. The design is full-bleed like many Upper Deck sets, but is also fairly forgettable at the same time. 354 - Angel Berroa 315 - David Ortiz (It's hard for me to totally hate David...

2009 Mets Gangsta and Grission Awards

(bumped from fanposts. --eric) With the 2009 season done and over, it's time to start handing out hardware. I present to you the first annual Gangsta and Grission Awards. Some of the categories had very tight races, while others were as one-sided as the Imperfect Game. The votes are in, however, and all winners receive as a way to remember their achievements, a Golden Jerry. Most Gangsta Injury Jonathon...

2009 Mets Anagrams

Inspired by this post at Gas Lamp Ball ( ed note: "inspired by" is just a nice way of saying "stolen from" ), and with a lot of help from the Internet Anagram Server , I managed to kill quite a bit of time this weekend. I plugged all of the 2009 Mets into the old anagram machine and here are the results. Feel free to try it yourself and post any other good ones in the comments....

Posnanski Remembers Andres Blanco As A Kid

Andres Blanco was signed out of Venezuela by the Kansas City Royals. Joe Posnanski had the privilege of seeing him play as a very young kid. After seeing Blanco’s ridiculously good play the other day, he remembers seeing him in the Dominican as a teenager. And that day in the Dominican I watched the greatest young defensive shortstop I had ever seen. I don’t want that to sound like it...

The ten consecutive wins over Baltimore is the most for the Yankees against the O's in franchise history....

Cashman's Small Moves Paying Off Big Time

We all are aware of the fine job Brian Cashman did this offseason bringing in big name free agents CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Mark Teixeira. These moves were a key to the Yankees 2009 success, but any GM with money and a clue could have done the same. Cashman has impressed me the most with the smaller moves, the ones that took some real GM work. And those are the ones that might have put this team...

Don't get too excited about Carter...

NYBD explained why the Yankees put in a claim on Chris Carter, apparently the Yanks felt the need to tweak the Sox after losing out on Paul Byrd. I don't think Boston's roster spots are that critical and in the grander scheme of things, the move impacts the Mets more then the Red Sox's. Who knows maybe the Yanks are mad at us for claiming Angel Berroa, if they want we can give him back. But it was...

Wilson Valdez returns to replace Cora

The Mets have recalled Wilson Valdez to replace Alex Cora on the roster. Valdez should have been up a long time ago, he's the only true short stop option we have and should have never been replaced by Argenis Reyes or Angel Berroa. Valdez has decent range, veteran savvy at the position and a strong arm. None of the replacements have a good bat, so you might as well go with the best defender. While...

Happy Birthday Emily Applesauce - Wagner close to return with Mets, Delgado not, Mejia returns, interest in Sheffield

Happy belated birthday to my beautiful, wonderful new bride! And the Mets won. Hooray! What a day. And it rained at the beach and is looking like more rain. Yeah for the internet to keep me busy inside. Meet the Mets Somehow, Billy Wagner will probably be the first of the Met formerly marquis players to return from major injuries . Particularly since Carlos Delgado managed to injure himself during...

Outer Banks Applesauce - Perfect Wagner, Giles talks sense to Mets, Nationals are hot

Ah, one more vacation before I plunge into first year law books. For now, I have plenty of time to wake up early and link to articles for everyone. Hope you enjoyed the near sweep by the Padres. Meet the Mets Billy Wagner has not allowed a run yet in his minor league rehabilitation . The Mets are still reportedly trying to deal him. Hardball Times explains why Bobby Parnell is not a starting pitcher...

Here's a recap of this week's posts, which you might have missed while watching the way-too-long " Funny People ": Mike Pelfrey May Have Found His Out-Pitch - Sam shows us why Big Pelf's improved slider is encouraging. Jon Niese's Strike Rates - Eric breaks down Niese's swinging and called strikes by pitch. It's a shame Wednesday had to happen. Omar Minaya Did The Right Thing - Eric explains...

Odds & Ends: Berroa, Yankees, Scheppers, Pirates

More odds, more ends, more links... Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog reports that the Mets have designated Angel Berroa for assignment. Berroa's tenure in Flushing lasted 31 plate appearances, in which he fashioned a .148-.233-.185 batting line. George A. King III of The NY Post reports that the Yankees placed second baseman Robinson Cano, as well as relievers Brian Bruney, David Robertson, and Mark Melancon...

Mets DFA Berroa; Add Hernandez

Image by Keith Allison via Flickr As expected, the Mets designated Angel Berroa for assignment as Anderson Hernandez made his way to San Diego. At this point Berroa just isn’t a Major League player. I know that he was the 2003 AL Rookie of the Year. But something must have happened to him along the way [...]

News: Air Hernandez Up, Berroa DFA’d

Following the game, the Mets designated Angel Berroa for assignment, and added Anderson Hernandez to the 25–man roster. …this would suggest Luis Castillo may actually be ‘day to day,’ and not headed for the disabled list… Hernandez was re-acquired yesterday from the Nationals for 21–year-old, minor-leaguer Greg Veloz. Berroa had just four hits in 27 at bats with...

New York Mess

I cannot recall a team running into worse luck than the 2009 Mets. Mets players on the DL include: Starting Pitchers John Maine Fernando Nieve Relievers J.J. Putz Billy Wagner Infielders Jose Reyes Carlos Delgado Ramon Martinez Outfielder Carlos Beltran Oh, wait, I forgot: Luis Castillo tripped going down the dugout steps on Wednesday, and sprained his ankle. Seriously. So the Mets starting lineup...
