The Rockies plan to keep OF Ryan Spilborghs, according to FoxSports.com, “unless they receive a substantial offer.” …the thing is, how many of these outfielders do the Rockies intend on having next season… it would seem to me, eventually, they’ll need to remove one of Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez, Matt Murton or Brad Hawpe, or spilborghs, [...]

Some things to read while the Muppets make everything better (h/t Daily Drink ). In the interest of getting it done as early as possible, today's Mug is bullet pointed again: Prince Fielder finished fourth in the NL MVP balloting , appearing on all 32 ballots and getting five second place votes ( FanShot ). Ryan Braun also appeared on 16 ballots en route to an 11th place finish, but was ranked no higher...

Albert Pujols was named the 2009 National League Most Valuable Player today. And it wasn't really even a mild surprise that the vote was unanimous. Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard finished 3rd; Chase Utley 8th; Jayson Werth 17th; Shane Victorino 18th. Congratulations, Mr. Pujols. Brad Hawpe: Hawpe’s 2009 season is an example of why baseball needs a postseason honor, similar to the NBA’s All-NBA team, to go along with the midseason All-Star honor. The Silver Slugger award is nice, but it doesn’t get the amount of attention that the All-NBA team does: being named All-NBA is considered a great [...]

I created UZR projections for the 2010 season and the values are available on a Google Documents Spreadsheet . I got 4 years worth of UZR numbers from Fangraphs. Then I did a 5-4-3-2 yearly weighting regressed to 125 games with a -0.7UZR aging factor ( article where the math is explained ). I selected for the worksheet any players that played in at least 63 games at the position over the last 4 years....

Bet #1 — Chances Brad Hawpe will be a Rockie on Opening Day 2010 Over/Under – 96% With an abundance of left-handed hitters, there has been speculation that Hawpe would likely be dealt. That, however, would only be the case if the Rockies felt they received a solid return, such as the Matt Holliday trade last off-season. This was moderately surprising to me . Outfielders Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier received honors Thursday as the best hitters at their positions, the first year since 1995 (Mike Piazza and Eric Karros) that the Dodgers had a pair of winners and the first time they've had two outfielders selected in the same season. It was the first such honor for each player. My thoughts later, but my first impression...

In what will be a semi-weekly occurrence from now until January on Purple Row Academy, I'm going to update my post on the State of the Rockies . In other words, I will update my loyal readers (all three of you)--as well as anyone stupid intrepid enough to follow me after the jump as to the roster framework the Rockies are looking at as some big offseason deadlines approach. This week, I'll be looking...

Purple Row gives a big shout out to anybody who served in the United States military on Veteran's Day. Your service to the country is vastly appreciated. The notes from Patrick Saunders at the Denver Post this morning indicates that the delays to the expected announcement of contract extensions for Dan O'Dowd and Jim Tracy are due to some fine points in the deals still being worked out, but both still...

Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post has the Rockies hot stove chatter; let's take a look. GM Dan O'Dowd explained that, "There is a difference between listening and attempting to move a player." Brad Hawpe falls squarely into the "listening" category. New contracts for O'Dowd and manager Jim Tracy are still pending a few small details. The Rockies are trying to trade Garrett Atkins....
