And yet that doesn't even begin to describe how bad this past season was for Brad Lidge . The Phillies ' vaunted closer, who was literally (not figuratively) perfect in 2008, literally ( not figuratively...

At one time I hoped the Mets would roll into the playoff's with the best bullpen combo in the league, if the Mets entered the seventh inning with a lead the game had the potential to be over going from Wagner to Putz to K-Rod. Obvious things didn't work and two parts of the trio are moving on... Billy Wagner has signed a one year deal with the Braves worth 7MM to be their closer. Wagner will be the...

As winter approaches and the '09 baseball season fades into memory, we once again recognize/reward some deserving individuals: *The first annual EARL WEAVER/FULL PACK Award: Chris Ray of the Orioles. Formerly an effective closer, the guy gave up 64 hits and surrendered eight HR's in just 43 innings this year while pitching to an ERA of 7.27--giving Orioles fans more indigestion than any greasy crab...

The greatest need for the 2010 Phillies is the bullpen. The rotation, while not spectacular, is solid. The lineup is close to spectacular regardless of who plays third base. The can get anyone to backup Ruiz. The bullpen, however, needs a touch-up. Brad Lidge is facing surgery after an absolutely horrid season. He has a ability to bounce back to 2008 form but he could also repeat the (injury plagued')...

It was a day that no Phillies fan will soon forget. Just hours before the Phillies were set to play the role of visitor for the home opener of the Washington Nationals, the legendary voice of the team, Harry Kalas , passed away as he prepared for the afternoon game's broadcast. Who else would be fitting to start the game on the mound than Jamie Moyer . Moyer had grown up watching Phillies baseball...

The Philadelphia Phillies accomplished quite a bit in 2009, despite falling just short of the coveted World Series Championship repeat. In fact, just getting back to the Fall Classic showed quite a bit of determination, and, to make it more impressive, they did it with a team that was inferior to their 2009 Championship squad. In 2008, the stars aligned for the club, as Brad Lidge reached nearly unattainable...

Hey, I've started a Twitter account for this site - @churchofbasebal - because I want to go back to my original "daedalus" purpose with that account. Yes, it only has one L at the end because of the character limit. Today's tweets: Did you know? The NY Bankee$ interlocking logo was first designed to be a medal for NYPD shot in the line of duty? The crack of the bat is the requiem of a pitch....

There is a solid case for Manuel to win the NL Manager of the Year But I don't think it will happen. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel entered the season guiding the defending World Series champions but he had a lot of adversity within the team to overcome en route to a third consecutive NL East title and second straight trip to the World Series. His "ace" Cole Hamels was anything but all season,...

Yeah, you read that correctly. All year long while Lidge was blowing saves many fans of the Fightins were convinced that Lidge was hurt. It was repeatedly denied but as soon as the season finished, a season that saw Lidge give up three runs in a tie Game 4 of the World Series, he was on the operating room schedule for at least one procedure. Just think if Lidge could have been fixed in the middle of...

Add another infielder to the off-season wish list In 2010 the Phillies will have a vastly different looking bench. With Matt Stairs , Miguel Cairo , and Paul Bako already on the free agent market , today the Phillies said so long to infielder Eric Bruntlett . According to David Murphy of the Philadelphia News the Phillies released Bruntlett and he accepted the chance to become a free agent and is not...

Four Phillies - Eric Bruntlett, Tyler Walker, Andy Tracy, and Paul Hoover - were removed from the 40-man roster and became free agents today, according to Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Bruntlett, 32 in March, hit .171/.224/.238 in 118 plate appearances, spending time all around the diamond. He came over in the November '07 Brad Lidge trade with the Astros. Walker, 34 in May, tossed 35.3...

Casey Michel has this to say in the Rice Thresher about the Yankees winning the World Series. I didn't cry when the New York Yankees won the World Series last week. I didn't mope, or bite my tongue, or call home and complain until I turned blue. I didn't throw a trash can at a Baker 13 runner out of anger or spite. Don't get me wrong - I was angry. The veins in my head looked like a roadmap through...

Brad Lidge, who had a dreadful season, underwent flexor tendon surgery and his recovery could set him behind schedule. Meanwhile, J.C. Romero could also miss the early going. Bottom line: bullpen is a major issue for the Phillies. While the third base debate continues, here’s the dire situation in back of the Phillies’ bullpen. Brad Lidge was the worst closer in baseball last season. He...

PHILADELPHIA – Brian Cashman leaned against the wall just outside manager Joe Girardi's office as the best players money can buy milled about inside a quiet, but quietly confident, clubhouse. The longest-running gripe in baseball is the Yankees have so much cash that only they can afford to bury their mistakes, and since 1998, the still boyish-looking general manager has been the guy wielding the shovel....

PHILADELPHIA – Time out! Jorge Posada pops out of his crouch, stands up in the catcher's box and raises both arms above his head. Hang on, everybody. He's going to need a minute to chat with his pitcher. And then, here it comes ... BOO!! Restless fans, jeering loud enough to hear all over Philadelphia. "I don't care," Posada said. "It's just a big situation. Every time I got out there, it was big."...
