2009 NL Gold Glove Projections - based solely on Defense

With the AL Gold Gloves announced on Tuesday, it's time to project the NL awards - especially since they will be announced today. I'll keep this simple. Based on UZR/150, here are the best defenders at their positions for 2009. All data is from Fangraphs.com. 1B - Derrek Lee , Cubs (4.7). AP was 5th with a 0.8. 2B - Chase Utley , Phillies (11.3). He was tied with Freddy Sanchez, but Sanchez only played...

Free Allen Craig!

Before this year, one of the Cardinals greatest strengths was considered to be their excellent depth at third base. The incumbent, Troy Glaus , had put up a 5 WAR season in his first year with the club and most thought that he would able to produce similar results this year if healthy. In addition to that, prospects David Freese and Joe Mather were coming off great years in AAA and were expected to...

I Caught A Foul Ball!

I caught a foul ball at a Pacific Coast League playoff game in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Wednesday night. It was the first foul ball of my life! It came off the bat of Memphis Redbirds second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir in the top of the fifth. Then, in the top of the sixth, as it began raining, we saw the home team Isotopes turn a triple play ! Eric Stults began the sixth by walking Brian Barden and...

DeRosa put on 15-day disabled list

ST. LOUIS, July 7 (UPI) -- Cardinals' utility man Mark DeRosa has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left wrist, the team said. The action is retroactive to July 1. St. Louis acquired DeRosa June 28 from Cleveland for pitcher Chris Perez and a player to be named later. DeRosa is hitless in nine at bats, with one walk, since he was acquired by the Cards. He was batting .270 with...

It's Also a Kick in the Junk

Our pal Tim Souers was inspired by Saturday's post and gave me this awesome graphic. And I don't really care to harp on the trade, but let me give you my final thoughts. The Cardinals got a good player and it should help them...a little. DeRosa was a 3.8 WAR (Wins Above Replacement) last year, he's been 1.1 so far this year as his defense at third hasn't been too great (at least according to UZR)....
