Twins Notes: 40 Men, Name Changes, and Lawn Protection With the Rule 5 draft coming next week the Twins protected Danny Valencia , Robert Delaney , Deolis Guerra , Alex Burnett , Loek Van Mil , and Estarlin De Los Santos by adding them to the 40-man roster . All six prospects would have been Rule 5 eligible for the first time. De Los Santos is the only surprise, because he's on the bubble for my upcoming...

Twins Notes: Washburn, Buscher, Huber, Crede, Neshek Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune notes that the Twins "are expected to pursue" free agent Jarrod Washburn , which certainly isn't surprising. At various points over the past two years the Twins have been linked to Washburn in trade rumors, and depending on who you believe they were on the verge of acquiring him from the Mariners...

A couple items of note this week include the Twins outrighting Brian Buscher to Rochester. This cleared a 40-man roster spot before the five free agents are removed in the next week. Why this was done at this time remains a mystery? My best guess is that the Twins were in discussion on some deal from which they may have needed an open spot on their roster. It turned out to not be the case with the...

When Bill Smith took over as Twins' GM back in 2007, he wasted no time in completing his first roster purge, removing Josh Rabe, Luis Rodriguez, Lew Ford and Tommy Watkins from the 40-man roster just weeks after the regular season came to an end. I lauded the move at the time , noting that Smith was immediately "trimming the fat" and creating space on the roster for more useful players. Terry...

Rays Close to Dealing Akinori Iwamura UPDATE: Hat tip to fischean, it looks like Pittsburgh might be the NL team on the move for Iwamura . Source? None other than Dan Kovacevik. There's also been some unconfirmed talk of the Marlins being involved ...which is exactly where the Twins are at: speculationville. UPDATE: Roger Mooney of BradentonHerald.com says Iwamura’s trade should be completed...

Twins Outright Brian Buscher The Twins have outrighted Brian Buscher to Triple-A Rochester this afternoon. He can become a minor league free agent 15 days after the conclusion of the World Series. Do not expect Buscher to remain with the Twins.

Which is exactly the position the Twins find themselves in this year, Almost two years ago to the day I talked about how this club would go about replacing Torii Hunter . More photos » by Jim Mone - AP Browse more photos » A common theme, I feel. Joe Mauer will be catching today, playing with a "hip flexor", which basically causes pain any time you try to flex a leg upward; kicking, lifting a knee, that kind of thing. So, really, not idea for your catcher. I'm thinking maybe DH'ing Mauer today, for his own good, would be for the best. With a four-man...

Bit of mild news from Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. Minnesota third baseman Matt Tolbert is going on the disabled list after pulling his oblique last night. Brian Buscher will replace him on the Twins roster. Tolbert and Buscher are pretty similar players: Corner outfield types who haven’t hit much in the big leagues, though Tolbert was a nice [...] Click on the headline for the rest of this...

Twins put Matt Tolbert on disabled list, activate Brian Buscher. I suppose this should be a fanshot rather than a fanpost as I don't have any real analysis to provide here, but I find this a bit discouraging. Tolbert had really been getting some pretty good wood on the ball lately and had been playing well enough defensively that 3rd was no longer the twilight zone that it was for awhile after Crede...
