Wednesday Bantering: Today's Roy Halladay Rumor, John McDonald and Buck Coats

So today's Roy Halladay rumor? According to the New York Daily News the Red Sox are going to 'make a big push' to get Doc before the start of the winter meetings Dec. 7th. The reasoning, apparently, is that the Yankees are meeting next week to decide on things like budget for the next season, so the Red Sox figure they would like try to get something done before the Yankees get organized. The Red Sox...

Royals Sign Josh Rupe, Buck Coats

The Kansas City Royals have signed a pair of players, pitcher Josh Rupe and outfielder Buck Coats, to minor league contracts, according to a press release. Rupe, 27, pitched four times out of the bullpen for the Texas Rangers last season, posting a 15.43 ERA and allowing 17 baserunners in just 4.2 IP. The right-hander was a little more successful for the Rangers in 2008, recording a 5.14 ERA in 89.1...

Baseball America has listed their top 10 Cubs prospects ....drumroll please... Starlin Castro Brett Jackson Josh Vitters Andrew Cashner Jay Jackson Hak-Ju Lee Logan Watkins Chris Carpenter Ryan Flaherty D.J. LeMehieu I was expecting Kyler Burke to make the list, but apparently repeating A ball justifiably knocked him down. You can compare and contrast with Arizona Phil's Top 15 list from last week....

Jays Call Up Accardo, Purcey and Phillips

Continuing the 'do as little as possible' mode that the Jays are in at the moment, they have called up David Purcey , Jeremy Accardo and Kyle Phillips . They moved Shawn Marcum from the 15 to the 60 day DL to make room for Phillips on the 40 man roster. Moving Marcum doesn't cost them anything as he wasn't going to pitch this season so it doesn't matter which list he is on. Purcey will likely fill...

Thames Tees Off for Dunedin

The affiliates one-upped themselves from Friday night and won four games on the Saturday. Reno 14 Las Vegas 6 It was another rough day for the 51s on the bump. Starter TJ Beam allowed eight runs in five innings. Rommie Lewis and Brian Wolfe then each allowed three runs. Sean Stidfole had a nice outing with no runs allowed in 1.1 innings. Buck Coats led the offense with three hits, which was equalled...

A Wild, Wild, Wild Walk-Off

The GCL Blue Jays won in extras thanks to a wild eleventh inning. Meanwhile, Las Vegas won a rare 1-0 game with a four-man shutout. New Hampshire lost and Dunedin split their doubleheader because of a Tampa grand slam in the first game, but won the second on a three-run triple by Eric Thames. Auburn and Lansing won by the same 3-1 score with key relief being provided by Mathew Morgal and Jason Roenicke,...

Another Forgettable Day

Four losses and two games were postponed or cancelled. Ho hum. Reno 6 @ Las Vegas 4 Boxscore Fabio Castro started and nearly got the quality start, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs. He struggled with his control, walking five against five strikeouts. Bill Murphy entered in relief and took the loss to fall to 0-6. Murphy surrendered two runs on two hits and two walks in 1.2 innings...

Go Nuts For Lansing & Las Vegas

The teams whose cities begin with "L" get the "W's" Tuesday night. Go figure! The 51's get the big inning twice, the Lugnuts are on the right side of a split against their Tigers counterparts and a strange injury in Auburn sidelines the Doubledays best hitter in a 2-4 night for the affiliates. Las Vegas 11 Salt Lake 6 Salt Lake City, UT - The 51's went all haywire and gave the Bees...

GCL Jays Ruin the Pattern

If it wasn't for the second game in a GCL double-header, the affiliates would have scored progressively fewer runs as you descend the minor league ladder. So what I'm saying is, stop reading after Dunedin. Las Vegas 9 at Salt Lake 8 The 51s did a pretty good job of scoring throughout the game, and yet they were behind from the bottom of the 1st until the top of the 8th when they broke through for 3...

Playing Out the String

Honestly, this was depressing to read and write about. Absolutely nothing of note went on for the affiliates as they picked up one win in five tries. I'm just writing out the string at this point. Las Vegas 5 Salt Lake 6 Kevin Howard , Buck Coats , and Jason Lane each had two hits for the 51s while Aaron Mathews drove in a pair. J.P. Arencibia was 0-for-3 but did manage a walk. Davis Romero started...

Deuces Wild

Two wins, two losses, and two rain outs. It's all sussed out below. Las Vegas 3 Salt Lake 8 First the good news: Three relievers combined to shutout the Bees over the final 8.1 frames. Now the bad: Fabio Castro coughed up 8 runs in his 0.2 innings of work. That's pretty much all there is to this one. Castro surrendered 8 hits and a walk while retiring just two guys. Things were pretty much sealed at...

Las Vegas Does Us Proud

The 51s held on for the win after a nail-biting ninth. Beyond that, more bleakness... and don't even look at the New Hampshire game report if you have a weak stomach. Las Vegas 5 Round Rock 4 The 51s offense has struggle a bit in the wake of losing both Travis Snider and Randy Ruiz to the Jays, but the club has reeled off a few good games recently. Last night, veteran pitcher Marty McLeary held the...
