NEEDS Their biggest needs, in order, appear to be a back-of-the- bullpen arm with the stuff to pitch the eighth and ninth innings, a multiple-innings arm, and a dependable situational lefty. The Phillies are hoping to re-sign Chan Ho Park, which would fill the multi-innings void and also give them another pitcher for l

There are only 137 days until opening day, but there is still plenty of Phillies news during the off season. The Phillies added Quintin Berry (OF), Yohan Flande (LHP) and Jesus Sanchez (RHP) to the 40-man roster. Charlie Manuel finished sixth in the National League Manager of the Year voting. Chan Ho Park has his eyes set on [...]

Plenty to absorb this morning, baseball fans: The Red Sox have asked the Braves for medical records of free agent relievers Mike Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano, according to the New York Post. WEEI.com also notes that catcher George Kottaras has been released. Chan Ho Park wants to be a starter, while the Phillies, most other teams, and the results on the field see him as a reliever. Todd Zolecki also...

Omar Vizquel's name is being floated around as a possible replacement for the newly departed Eric Bruntlett. Vizquel, who is 42, still manages to be in excellent shape and play outstanding defense at multiple positions (SS, 2nd, and 3rd), but his bat is weak. Of course, a crusty piece of pooh could replace Bruntlett, so I'm not going to complain much if the Phillies decide to go this route. Last year...

There is a solid case for Manuel to win the NL Manager of the Year But I don't think it will happen. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel entered the season guiding the defending World Series champions but he had a lot of adversity within the team to overcome en route to a third consecutive NL East title and second straight trip to the World Series. His "ace" Cole Hamels was anything but all season,...

Add another infielder to the off-season wish list In 2010 the Phillies will have a vastly different looking bench. With Matt Stairs , Miguel Cairo , and Paul Bako already on the free agent market , today the Phillies said so long to infielder Eric Bruntlett . According to David Murphy of the Philadelphia News the Phillies released Bruntlett and he accepted the chance to become a free agent and is not...

I love Jamie Moyer . Who can not find a reason to not appreciate the character and wisdom of Moyer? Moyer is a guy who understands the game of baseball and would love to discuss it with anyone who would listen to his words. I absolutely love when a camera catches him discussing pitching to a younger pitcher like Cole Hamels , JA Happ , or Kyle Kendrick . With one year remaining on his contract the...

Thanks for the memories Matt. As reported by Todd Zolecki and a number of other outlets yesterday, Chan Ho Park , Pedro Feliz , Matt Stairs and Paul Bako have all officially filed for free agency. Of the four players listed above the one I would most like to see return would be Chan Ho Park in a relief role. My question would be if he seriously wants to pursue a starting gig somewhere else first. He...

Less than a week removed from the World Series and the Phillies' hot stove is heating up. Chan Ho Park, Matt Stairs and Paul Bako joined Pedro Martinez, Miguel Cairo, Pedro Feliz and Brett Myers in filing for free agency. Free agents have been assigned Type A and B designation and now the stage is set for teams to talk turkey. Only Park and Eyre will garner extra picks for the Phils. Aside from a few...

Behind a group of talented young position players and several surprising pitching performances, the 2004 Texas Rangers won 89 games after averaging 72 wins per season from 2000-2003. Ryan Drese and Kenny Rogers anchored a staff that improved from 67 runs above replacement (RAR) in 2003 to 122 RAR in 2004. The 2004 bullpen was slightly better than what had been a very good bullpen in 2003 (91 RAR vs....
