Two more members of the Boston Red Sox filed for free agency on Friday. They are pitcher Paul Byrd and utility infielder Chris Woodward. Byrd pitched in seven games for the Red Sox in 2009 after coming out of semi-retirement. He went 1-3 with a 5.82 ERA. Woodward came over from the Mariners after the Red Sox [...]

Evil Empire manager Joe Girardi is looking to change his uniform number from 27 to 28. My suggestion to him is to 86 this idea. Another would involve the number 96 backwards and any of his players. In all fairness, Girardi did bail someone out of a jam recently. Personally, I think it's ridiculous for managers and coaches to have numbers to begin with. They're usually wearing team-issued windbreakers...

The Red Sox made a wise move tonight, activating Paul Byrd for the ALDS and shelving Manny Delcarmen for the series. Byrd figures to be long man out of the pen, someone the Sox can turn to if they need someone to eat up valuable innings should a starter go down or be terribly ineffective. Delcarmen did nothing over the final games to show he belongs as anything other than a garbage time pitcher. Jed...

The addition of Jed Lowrie (over Nick Green) to the ALDS roster comes as no surprise, but it was a little strange to hear Gil Velazquez was chosen over Chris Woodward to be on call, if needed. The Red Sox would love to have Rocco Baldelli available to face lefties Scott Kazmir and Joe Saunders in Games 3 and 4, but his status (left hip flexor) is still up in the air. Rosters are not due until 1 PM...

Jed Lowrie will be the backup infielder on the Red Sox first round roster, manager Terry Francona said a short while ago. The move did not come as a surprise given the status of Nick Green and Chris Woodward, the...

Alex Gonzalez may have a hairline fracture in his right hand from getting beaned last night. Tito explained the injury: "Gonzie got a flor-scan, flor-scope, whatever they call that thing in there," he said. "It was actually a little bit inconclusive. That doesn't mean that -- I think they just feel a little more comfortable if they get some x-rays tomorrow morning. Paulie said it could...

Well, our corvids look to keep our their fine play over the last week and a half (having won five straight and eight of the last nine). It says something that in a world of uber-expensive coffee gadgets, a humble French press still makes some of the best coffee. It is a simple piece of technology, and it is the simplicity that makes the the coffee taste so good. There is no filter paper to tarnish the taste. So what does the [...]

From Dan Shaughnessy : One team is going all out to win every day. The other team is the Red Sox - asking you to stand back and look at the big picture. The starting lineups told you everything you needed to know about the respective approaches of these rivals. Yankees manager Joe Girardi, burning his guys in a manner like Don Zimmer (circa 1978), put out his best nine players along with the winningest...

Junichi Tazawa's 2009 season is over . The rookie pitcher was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a left groin strain (suffered in Chicago on September 4). I had no idea what to expect this year [his first professional experience after pitching in Japan's Industrial League in 2008]. But looking back on it, I had a better year than I could ever hope for, and looking back, I think it was a great...
