What an EXPOSition

The most recent Omar Minaya acquisition caused me to do some research. The following players were member of the 2003 and/or 2004 Expos (when Omar Minaya was GM): Brian Schneider Endy Chavez Fernando Tatis Claudio Vargas Tony Armas, Jr. Luis Ayala Ryan Church Val Pascucci For future reference, here is a random selection of others who were Expos in 2003-2004: Vladimir Guerrero Javier Vazquez Orlando...

Speed it up

Over the last few days I've heard several people ask why Claudio Vargas was sent down, only to bring up Tony Armas Jr. It does seem like both pitchers provide about the same thing, while not pitching spectacular they keep the team in the game ( which is exactly what you need from a fifth starter) and throw multiple innings as a longman. I believe Warthen worked well with Armas and wanted one of his...

Vargas Clears Waivers

Claudio Vargas has cleared waivers and will report back to AAA New Orleans. Vargas was 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA while with the Mets. I’m glad we didn’t lose Claudio, to be honest I think he should still be here and making the start tomorrow, not Tony Armas.

Break Up the "Mess"

By Jack "the hack" Mason (guest blogger) Okay- here we go- 4 games against the hated Yankees in 3 days, and I've had about all I can take with this roster. Sign Andy Phillips...DA Claudio Vargas...bring up Tony Armas...DA Trot Nixon'?? Even getting back Ryan Church just isn't enough to turn this team around. Let's face facts- we're a flawed team- scratch that- we're a flawed "half" of a team. Until...

Mets Minus the Long Man

As was reported here at Hot Foot by Gary Grund earlier, the Mets have called up Carlos Muniz to replace Claudio Vargas. Not only are the Mets now once again without a long man, but the team also heads into a gigantic 18-game stretch beginning with Friday’s doubleheader without a viable extra starting option on [...]

Muniz up / Vargas Down

SNY post game show reported that the Mets had DFA Claudio Vargas for assignment and recalled Carlos Muniz. Vargas struggled tonight in the long man role and gave up four runs raising his ERA to 4.62. Vargas has to accept assignment and then make it through waivers, he's been effective enough to hope that he makes it to AAA. It's odd that Muniz has been recalled, not only does it leave the team without...

Roster Move: Muniz Up, Vargas Down

The Mets have announced that they have sent Claudio Vargas down to Triple-A and have called up right-hander Carlos Muniz. Muniz will head to New York for his third stint with the major league team this season. He has a 5.14 ERA in 7.0 innings pitched for the team. Vargas was 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA prior [...]

News: Muniz Down, Pedro Back

Following tonight’s game, Willie Randolph announced that Carlos Muniz will be demoted to Triple-A New Orleans to make room for the return of Pedro Martinez. Meanwhile, according to Randolph, Mike Pelfrey will remain in the starting rotation, while Claudio Vargas will shift to the bullpen.

It will Probably be Muniz but it should be Heilman

Mike Peflrey pitched well enough to earn himself another start, meaning that it's more then likely that Claudio Vargas will become the long-man when Pedro is activated. The two relievers with options are Joe Smith and Carlos Muniz, both are pitching very well. Smith has seniority, which makes Muniz the odd man out. Prior to Sosa being waived, there was some discussion that Smith would be sent down...

Mets in the Afternoon: Notebook

-The Mets have a decision when Pedro Martinez is activated from the disabled list for his start Tuesday in San Francisco. It's not determined whether Mike Pelfrey or Claudio Vargas will go down to make room for Martinez. Of the two, bet on Pelfrey because he has options remaining. Carlos Muniz could be optioned with [...]

The Happy Recap: Mets 8 Dodgers 4

The Mets climbed back to .500 this evening by beating the Dodgers 8-4. While not perfect by any means, Claudio Vargas was good enough. He allowed four runs through 5.2 innings of work, leaving the rest of the game to the Mets wonderful bullpen. Carlos Muniz registered a key out to end the sixth inning by [...]

Buzz: Pelfrey in Rotation, C’Vargas in Pen

According to David Lennon, in a post to his blog for Newsday, when Pedro Martinez returns next week, the Mets may keep Mike Pelfrey in the rotation and move Claudio Vargas to long relief. …and, i guess, demote Carlos Muniz, who is creating his own version of the Heath Bell Shuttle… Lennon also writes about Fernando Tatis, [...]

Gameday: Mets at Rockies (Game 2)

Claudio Vargas (0–2) looks to stop the bleeding as he takes the mound against Jeff Francis (1–4). After getting swept by the Braves and a loss last night in extra innings, the Mets have lost five in a row. Keys to the game: Focus. In the 10th last night, Jose Reyes was quick and determined enough [...]
