Will the Mets Land a Big Fish?

At MetsFansForever, Will Sommer asks several bloggers which “big” free agent will be signed by the Mets Andrew Vazzano unearths a slice of good news from the winter meetings – that David Wright and Daniel Murphy were working out with Howard Johnson, and Jeff Francoeur may be with HoJo later in the winter. Ted Berg wrote an [...]

AAOP: Second Place

The second-best AAOP entry we received -- with an average score of 8.00 -- was My Day in Omar's head by Mango Mets Fan. The highlights. Traded Luis Castillo for Albert Arias (or any reliever, really). Signed Carlos Delgado for one year, $5 million. Delgado's health is a huge question mark but this deal is pretty low-risk. If he plays 120 games he'll be worth this and more. Signed Matt Holliday for...

Mets Hot Stove 2009: Many holes to fill

I did a piece for BaseballReflections.com in advance of next week's Winter Meetings on what the Mets need to address during the offseason. You can check out the piece here . The Mets have two big needs - power-hitting left fielder and no. 2 starter - and many people put those needs in that order. But I rank no. 2 starter first. The Met lineup is in better shape than their starting rotation. In 2010,...

Back from the dead..

Hello to all, hope your holiday season so far has been pleasant. I took time off from writing about the New York Mets because of last year's disaster. I have been doing a lot of work ( to pay the bills) and ignoring the fact that the Mets were not even close to making the play-offs and the Hankee's won the World Series. This off-season will be a long and dragged out process.. The Mets have been pondering...

Note: The Mets need More Power

In a preview of the Winter Meetings, for MLB.com, Marty Noble writes: “The Mets appear all but definite to use Daniel Murphy at first base, so that would preclude the return of Carlos Delgado and make left field the position for the power upgrade.” …i really hope the Mets are not framing it simply as a ‘power [...]

Just When I Thought You Couldn't Get Any Dumber, You Go and Do Something Like This . . .

I am a Mets fan. Note the present tense; yes, I'm still a fan despite the disemboweling Mets Township took this year at the hands of this once-proud franchise. Well, at least once- feisty . Now there are just thousand-yard-stares abound in both the organization and its fan base. By late August we all became a bunch of R. P. McMurphys, lumbering along, hoping and praying someone would appear to Big...

Sheffield wasn't used properly ?

I've been very busy the past few days, so in case you missed this I couldn't over look the opportunity to pass this along. Let me get this straight, the guy who after realizing he wasn't getting a contract extension and wasn't being traded then tried to walk out on the team, is now complaining about playing time. Even though Sheffield returned to the team I find it quite curious that his injury became...

2009 Analysis: Gary Sheffield

This entry is part 38 in the series 2009 Mets EvaluationsEntering the 2009 season, the Mets were one slugger short of a championship lineup. They didn’t bother acquiring one during the winter because Daniel Murphy was going to hit like Wade Boggs and the Fernando Tatis – Ryan Church in right field was going to [...]

No Holliday Or Lackey? No Problem!

Bill Madden at the Daily News recently wrote that the Mets will be looking to cut payroll this offseason. If true, this is bad news for anyone hoping to see Matt Holliday , John Lackey or Jason Bay in a Mets uniform. Madden's estimate that there will only be $20 million available to spend on free agents seems a little low, but a $40 million estimate seems too high. If none of the big three free agents...

Racap my take on the 1B market...

Since yesterday seemed to be the 1B rumor day, I thought it only be fitting that I try to recap the multiple players available for the position. The Mets are rumored to be looking for a platoon partner for Daniel Murphy at the position, this plan serves two purposes, get a longer look at Murphy at 1B and not block Ike Davis in 2010... I must acknowledge that I don't like the idea, I've seen enough...

Rule 5: The Other Draft

Finishing with a terrible record in 2009 affords the Mets a few luxuries, the most obvious being that they will have the seventh overall pick in this year's Amateur Draft. However, also worth paying attention to, they will receive the same selection in this winter's Rule 5 Draft. Though the Rule 5 draft is essentially a swap meet of replacement level players, gems like Johan Santana , Josh Hamilton...

Minors: Young Mets Accept Losing, Backman Doesn’t « Amazin Memories

…well, i don ‘t like hearing that one bit… “So,” Noble explains, “the Mets were delighted when Jeff Francoeur became available and when Daniel Murphy wore his grit on his sleeve … and when Backman contacted Wilpon in September, …Read More…

2010 Offseason Plan

The 2009 Opening Day payroll was approximately 100 million dollars, and given all the recent divorce news, I find it hard to believe that number would be increased going into 2010. Therefore, my plan is based on a operating budget of about 100 million dollars with perhaps a bit of flexibility. Just to clarify, this is what I would do if I were the GM. Projected 2010 Payroll-100 Million Dollars As I...

Chone Figgins To The Mets and David Wright to First Base

But the most interesting comment from one scout about the interest in Figgins was that the Mets could play Figgins at third and move Wright to first base. Mets roundtable discussion, part four: Should Daniel Murphy start at first base in 2010? - - NJ.com Part four of the blogger Q&A from NJ.com. Nothing new from sizzlechest5. Heer's today's question: Could you live with Daniel Murphy starting at first base if the Mets sign Matt Holliday or Jason Bay to play left field? If not, what should the Mets do at first base?
