According to Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Daily News, the Phillies signed David Newhan as a player-coach for their Triple A club. Newhan was released by the Astros on March 29th given their desire for a bench player who could play shortstop. The 35 year-old hit .260/.297/.404 in 111 plate appearances last year for Houston.

The muddied roster picture is becoming a little clearer each day. Apparently, Cecil Cooper didn't personally inform David Newhan of the decision to release him. Newhan found out through the media. According to MLB.com's Alyson Footer last night, the Astros released David Newhan. Newhan wasn't pleased that he had to read about his exclusion from the backup shortstop competition on MLB.com rather than hearing about it from manager Cecil Cooper. The 35 year-old Newhan hit .182/.308/.182 in 38 plate appearances this spring.
