Astros Offer Arbitration To Jose Valverde, Pass On Miguel Tejada, LaTroy Hawkins, And Doug Brocail Valverde wasn't particularly appealing anyway. Tejada has a spotty fielding history. UZR only really liked him twice: in 2004 (7.1 per 150) and in 2008 (9.4 per 150). He's -4.7 (per 150) over his career and was -12.4 (per 150) in 2009. There has been some talk about shifting him to third, which doesn't...

The Astros offered arbitration only to Jose Valverde (A) and not Miguel Tejada (A), LaTroy Hawkins (A), or Doug Brocail (B), according to the team's Senior Director of Digital Media Alyson Footer. Interesting relief choices; I'd predicted no arbitration offers to Valverde or Hawkins. That said, an offer to Valverde always made sense. He does not seem likely to accept arbitration and take a one-year...

Arbitration decisions are looming and the fate of the Astros offseason will likely be determined by the decisions made by the front office. I know each of us here has some thoughts on the matter, so here's a fanpost with my analysis (hopefully a little more in-depth than you get elsewhere)...disagree with me in the comments! Of the Astros free agents this offseason, only four of them really matter...

One thing you couldn't have accused the Astros of just before the 2009 season was having a great deal of pitching depth. Wandy Rodriguez had improved in 2008, but it was unknown whether he could continue the trend after just one really good year. The bullpen had been (in part) anchored by such luminous names as Doug Brocail and later the previously-mediocre LaTroy Hawkins . Randy Wolf had been let...

Members of Coaching Staff named; Brocail's option declined for 2010 Bobby Meacham (1st base) and Al Pedrique (bench coach) will be coaches next season. The Astros will pay $250,000 to buy out Doug Brocail's option for 2010. The probable Type B Free Agent will most likely not be offered arbitration either.

The Astros declined their $2.85MM option on reliever Doug Brocail, according to MLB.com's Brian McTaggart (via Twitter). Instead they'll pay the $250K buyout on the righty, who turns 43 in May. Brocail pitched only 17.6 big league innings this year due to shoulder and hamstring injuries. While Brocail projects as a Type B free agent, an arbitration offer from the Astros is highly unlikely. McTaggart...
