The Cincinnati baseball writers have named Joey Votto the team's top player, and Edinson Volquez the top pitcher for 2008. No surprises there, and reasonable selections. Were they the right selections? One way to tell is with Baseball Prospectus' WARP measure, Wins Against Replacement Player. It is a measure that attempts to include a player's batting, fielding, and pitching accomplishments all into...

Joey Votto was unanimously voted Reds MVP by the writers, while Edinson Volquez was named Outstanding Reds Pitcher. Aaron Harang won the Joe Nuxhall Good Guy Award. Volquez is a no-brainer, and though Votto certainly wasn’t the Reds most productive hitter, I’m not going to waste any breath arguing against his selection. He’s an excellent player, [...]

Votto, Volquez lauded by writers As expected, Joey Votto was named the team MVP for 2008 and Edinson Volquez won the pitcher of the year award. According to Fay , Votto got all of the MVP votes, but strangely Volquez did not receive all of the pitcher votes. Also receiving votes were Francisco Cordero and Bronson Arroyo. I would have thought that Volquez would have been the unanimous selection. Congrats...

Unfortunately, this link from Minnesota Public Radio still doesn't tell us who were the three people who voted Edinson Volquez for NL Rookie of the Year.

…and my overreaction to their overreaction. Overall, the BBWAA got things right with the awards, though after first place, it gets messy. For instance, Edinson Volquez, who had pitched 80 innings between 2005-07 and is clearly not a rookie, received three second-place votes for NL Rookie of the Year. Brandon Webb undeservedly received 73 total points [...]

Things to ponder while you ponder things: Matt York/AP We all know that Edinson Volquez needs to work on his control a bit. He had the 7th highest walks per 9 IP among qualified pitchers last season. More importantly though, he may want to improve on throwing first pitch strikes. He had the second lowest rate for first pitch strikes in baseball last season, behind only Barry Zito (for qualified starters)...

The winner of the National League’s Most Valuable Player award will be announced Monday, followed by the American League MVP on Tuesday. As a 21-year member of the Baseball Writers Association of America, it is my sincere hope that my brethren make the right decisions. It has long been fashionable for fans to second-guess the BBWAA [...]

The Baseball writers have picked the right people as Rookie of the Year winners in Geo Soto and Evan Longoria. However. it seems some writers who are part of the voting need a refresher on who is eligible to vote for. The Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez recieved votes even though he is not Rookie eligible. Here’s [...]

In what is perhaps, outside of Edinson Volquez’s Rookie of the Year votes, the most unintentionally hilarious story of the off-season so far, Topps has named Kei Igawa to the card company’s AAA All Star team. Chad Jennings has the press release from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre home office, and it too is rather funny simply because [...]

Just kidding. Your Managers of the Year are Joe Maddon and Lou Piniella. Considering how utterly poor a job Piniella did with the Cubs in October, I’m amused by this award. Perhaps Major League Baseball should consider handing out the hardware earlier in the fall. It’s not like the Hot Stove League is wanting for [...]

Uh, He’s Not a Rookie: “Edinson Volquez appears on three NL Rookie of the Year ballots, even though he’s not a rookie. It wasn’t even something esoteric like the days-on-the-roster rule; he threw 80 innings for Texas prior to 2008, and the cutoff is 50. I think the truth about my rejected membership is that [...]

As it turns out, 3 writers voted for Edinson Volquez for the NL ROY even though he's not eligible because he wasn't a rookie in 2008 (thanks to the always well thought out Keith Law for the details). Seriously, there is no excuse for this. Remember, the BBWAA denied Law and Rob Neyer membership because they don't write for traditional newspapers. Looks like the choices the BBWAA decided upon were much,...

Cincinnati pitcher Edinson Volquez was not eligible for Rookie of the Year in 2008, but the BBWAA mistakenly put him on the ballot anyway. He came in fourth. [Epic Carnival]
