Sunday Bantering: Brian Butterfield and Today's Doc Rumor

There is a really good interview with Brian Butterfield on Baseball Prospectus . I would have liked a question about Edwin Encarnacion fielding, what he has to work on and if Butterfield thinks he can become a good fielding 3B, but it's a really nice talk. I'll copy in a couple of the questions but go read the full thing. DL: Do you ever look at defensive metrics to see if they match what your eyes...

The Season That Was: Edwin Encarnacion

More photos » by Reinhold Matay - AP Looks good fielding this ball. (AP Photo/Reinhold Matay) Browse more photos » Edwin had a good season in 2008, hitting .251/.340/.466 with 26 home runs in 506 at bats for Cincinnati. It was pretty much in line with the two seasons he had before. 2009 should have been a good year since he was just 26. But he had a sore wrist starting in spring training....

Wells' Wrist Well Again

The wrist surgery for Vernon Wells went "well" ( get it ?) according to bluejays.com's Jordan Bastian . The 30 year-old center fielder is expected to be ready for the start of spring training next year. Vernon Wells leads off from second base during a game against Baltimore August 9th. Wells chased reliever Matt Albers from the game with an RBI single in the seventh to score Adam Lind in...

Playing Hurt

Mike Wilner says a lot of things I agree with in his post yesterday talking about Vernon Wells and Edwin Encarnacion 's wrist surgeries. In two of the last three years Vernon has had terrible seasons and seemingly in both he has tried to play through injuries. Now to his credit, neither year has he tried to use the injury as an excuse. In 2007 he hurt his shoulder and he never said anything about it,...

Vernon Wells to have Wrist Surgery

More photos » by Duane Burleson - ASSOCIATED PRESS Vernon is having surgery on the wrist of his glove hand. (AP Photo/Duane Burleson) Browse more photos » Vernon Wells is going to have surgery to repair cartilage in his left wrist, the wrist he broke back in May of 2008. Vernon never mentioned wrist pain to alibi his performance this season but I can't imagine it helped. Of course, since...

Wells & Encarnacion To Undergo Wrist Surgery

The National Post is reporting that center fielder Vernon Wells and third baseman Edwin Encarnacion will have wrist surgery this off-season. This isn't the first time Wells has had wrist problems. He broke his left wrist while making a diving catch during a game against Cleveland in May of 2008 and has also been plagued with hamstring problems the past two seasons. The 30 year-old Wells hit .260/.311/.400...

Bill James Player Projections, Part 2

Part two of our look at the Bill James Player Projections for our Blue Jay players. These come from the Bill James Handbook , that will come out soon from ACTA Sports . Edwin Encarnacion 259/.343/.465/.808 28 doubles, 21 Hr, 5.4 RC/27, 64 Runs, 69 RBI, 129 G I'd be quite happy with this from Edwin if he plays a decent 3B. He looks to have a strong arm, I'm thinking with help from Brian Butterfield...

Reds Report: Volquez, Bruce, Gomes

To put it mildly, this has been a rough year for Reds fans. Edinson Volquez had the Cincinnati faithful buzzing after posting a 3.21 ERA with 9.5 K/9 in his first full season in 2008. After logging just nine starts in the 2009 campaign, Volquez needed surgery to repair damage in his right elbow. The Reds faded fast as their depleted staff wasn't getting much of a lift from their sagging offense. Injuries...

2009 Upper Deck Baseball Series 1 Fat Pack

I feel as if Upper Deck has done a fantastic marketing job for passing trade. This is the third time that someone visiting the US has 'just happened' to see baseball cards and picked me a few packs. I'm not complaining, although I have to wonder out of all the cards available in the US, that Upper Deck is the one chosen to buy. Is it the colourful front and large image that draws non-collectors towards...
