7) Peter Bourjos , 22 - CF, AA .281/.354/.423 with 6 HR and 32 SB's. +7 bat, +15 glove Like last year, Bourjos' bat tailed off in the second half. Turns out, it was injury related: he underwent surgery last month to clean up his wrist, which had been bothering him since June. Once healthy and in Salt Lake, it would not surprise me at all to see him return to his first half, ~.800+ OPS ways. Given Bourjos'...
More photos » by Julie Jacobson - AP Browse more photos » A couple of days ago I received "The Bill James Handbook" in the mail (from ACTA Sports ). For those of you who are unfamiliar with the handbook, it's 95% stats with a little commentary thrown in. Earlier, I posted what the handbook had projected for the 2010 Angels, but here are a few other things I found interesting:...
More photos » by Chris Carlson - AP Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia has a busy off season in store for him. Browse more photos » Now that the Angels off-season is officially here, it's time to start the speculation of player moves the team may make prior to the start of the 2010 season. To help fuel the discussion on who should stay and who should go, below are the 2010 player...
More photos » by Elise Amendola - AP Browse more photos » Angels 3Bman Chone Figgins is a free agent. I think it will take $27 Million over 3 years to sign him. While he is a fan favorite, his skill set may be reproducible by Erick Aybar , who is younger and under club control at an affordable price for some time to come. He got caught stealing at a higher rate this year than in years past....
At least according to TotalZone. I ran these ratings from a different datasource than usual. Specifically, someone sent me files with data from MLBAM. Later in the offseason I'll compare it to the results from the source of all the other TotalZone ratings, the retrosheet files. Anyway, the top 15 runs saved for 2009: 1. Franklin Gutierrez, CF, +28 2. Nelson Cruz, RF, +23 3. Chone Figgins, 3B, +20 4....
Short is a big issue for 2010. Scutaro cannot be counted on we'd haveto assume (the Jays would do full medicals to know a lot better than usI hope) so what do they do? A strong #1 or #2 shortstop is needed. With this staff it has to be aleague average or better defensive one too (ala Scutaro & McDonald)but ideally also an offensive force (as good or better than Scutaro in2009). Checking Fangraphs...
Unfortunately Rich's Dodgers are out of it, but they had a solid season and reached the NLCS for a second year in a row. His Angles, on the other hand, won two of three in Anaheim and the series heads back to New York. The series resumes with weekend Saturday, and potentially Sunday, with the Angles needing to win both. Rich was treated to quite the game on Monday from the first row , as he watched...
Holy smokes, now that was a poorly-managed ball game. The Los AngelesAngels kept their World Series dreams alive for one more night, coming away with a 7-6 win over the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the ALCS Thursday night in what turned out to be a helluva baseball game. After striking early with a 4-0 lead off A.J. Burnett from the very first inning, the Angels waited until the seventh to blow...

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The umpires had another rough night in Game 4 of the AL championship series. Two blown calls went against the Angels during a 10-1 loss to the New York Yankees. Neither cost Los Angeles a run, but it was the latest round of shaky umpiring this October – and the string of missed calls has been an embarrassment to Major League Baseball throughout the playoffs. "I haven't...

Browse more photos » Fortunately, they had nothing to do with the outcome of ALCS game four, which the Yankees won 10-1. But there were three horrendous umpiring calls in consecutive innings in last night's game -- and two of them were made by Tim McClelland, who has a reputation as one of the best in...
The umpires this year have given umpirical evidence of awful officiating. The baseball playoff officiating has been so bad, with so many obvious blown calls, that the NBA's title of worst-officiated American sport (no sport is more poorly officiated than soccer) is in serious jeopardy. Even Big T(elev)en football and basketball officiating is not this bad. Phil Cuzzi's failure in game 2 of the ALDS...
Chris and I both reached the conclusion that Erick Aybar, shortstop for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, has that Thriller zombie look about him. And the scientific community is united in that fact .

ANAHEIM, Calif. – John Lackey pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game of the season, Torii Hunter hit a tiebreaking two-run homer and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 3-0 on Thursday night. Lackey (10-7) struck out seven and walked one, finishing in 115 pitches to help the Angels increase their AL West lead to five games over idle Texas. Los Angeles also moved a season-best...
