The Jays have added first baseman/DH Brian Dopirak to the 40-man roster and also acquired utility man Mike McCoy off the waiver wire from the Colorado Rockies. McCoy comes to the Jays after getting his first taste of the big leagues this past season. The 28 year-old right-handed hitter played 12 games with the Rockies as a September callup and there was speculation he might have been up sooner with...

There are many elements that go into every important decision. In the first place, you must try to grapple with the facts. What is the actual situation? Happy trails, Pete: Phils decline Feliz's $5 million option Per Scott Lauber from the Wilmington News-Journal . Probably a good decision by the organization. Fangraphs had Feliz providing $12.4 million in value over the past two years (on an $8.5 million contract), but nearly all of that came from his glove work, which had been slipping a bit in recent years. The nostalgic among us will remember Feliz...

Last week I recommended Garrett Atkins for a spot on our team , a possible upgrade over Fernando Tatis as the back-up corner infielder who might end up beating out Dan Murphy at 1B. Most of the people I spoke to about the idea either liked it or weren't against but were leery of his cost. That appears to be the same issue the Rockies are running into, apparently Atkins is to expensive going into arbitration...

Apparently the haves are going to have some more bounty to plunder -- and soon. According to Buster Olney this morning on ESPN Radio, many big-league clubs are going to non-tender players who are arbitration eligible and let them become free agents. The reason -- the economy and their own economics. Smaller market teams probably won't be patient for a potential star to emerge and might cut him loose...

Here are a few Sunday links to browse, as a huge sports day in Philadelphia begins.... John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle wonders if the "desperate-for-pop" San Francisco Giants will try to top the Boston Red Sox rumored four-year offer to Jason Bay (we heard some speculation about this yesterday too). If not, Shea names Garrett Atkins as a cheaper potential target for the Giants. SI.com's...

Of course I want a big name, power hitting 1B and I'd be a fool to not want the report that Adrian Gonzalez has been left off the Padres brochure to mean that he's available with the Mets having a chance to get him. But I'm also trying to be realistic, which is why I've taken to heart the reports that the Mets are going to look smaller at the position and go with a right handed platoon partner for...

In today's blog post at ESPN.com, Buster Olney indicates that there is belief among general managers that the "financial restructuring that has been occurring across the landscape is about to hit the arbitration-level players like a tidal wave." He mentions underperforming, but well paid players like Garrett Atkins and Kelly Johnson are prime non-tender bait, especially since their clubs...

Buster Olney's Saturday blog post Executives say that many of the names being discussed by teams as possible trade bait include a growing number of players with three to five-plus years of service time -- players who are eligible for arbitration. This is being read widely as a precursor to a wave of players in that group not being tendered contracts before the Dec. 20 deadline. "I think the market...

SAN DIEGO – Tony Gwynn drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in a three-run sixth inning, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 7-3 win over Jason Marquis and the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. Marquis (15-11) carried a 3-2 lead into the sixth when San Diego rallied to hand the NL wild card leaders a loss with 18 games to play. Marquis walked four batters in the inning, including one with the bases...
