The Astros are going to give 3B Chris Johnson and C Jason Castro every chance to be in the Opening Day starting lineup. But they're prepared to send one or both of them to AAA if they have tough springs. At the moment, the Astros are set at just four of eight positions: LF Carlos Lee, CF Michael Bourn, RF Hunter Pence and 1B Lance Berkman. Every other position is open. Some are less open than others....

by Alex Brandon - AP The market for Tejada will be tough to ascertain. View full size photo » Lets to talk about since the last time we looked at the free agency market. In this profile of what kind of deal Miguel Tejada may get, I thought it prudent to look at two important facts. First, how much will the Astros have available to spend? If, as Wade said, the Astros will reduce payroll in 2010,...

Are you ready to be a champion? You are? I hope you know that championships are expensive, and, uh, well, the local baseball team is in kind of a bind. Drayton McLane's net worth is still above $1 billion, but it'll go down fast if he starts throwing sawbucks at these ballplayers. Oh sure, he could raise the payroll a bit and considering it an investment in the future. If the Astros got back to respectable,...

More photos » by Kathy Willens - AP Browse more photos » I think we can officially call the 2009 season of Atlanta Braves outfielder Matt Diaz a "breakout season." For all NL right-fielders with at least 100 plate appearances, Matt Diaz led the league in batting average and on-base percentage. He was behind six other players in slugging percentage in the NL, but he was behind...

I've gotten lots of mail about my column advocating the hiring of Jim Fregosi. I'd guess about 75 percent of it is negative. The Astros are going to get a competent manager, and no matter who it is, he'll be a huge upgrade from Cecil Cooper. Manny Acta is as nice a man as you'll ever meet and proved in Washington that he can handle even baseball's toughest job with grace and dignity. He's the whole...

I mentioned there would be a more in-depth look a the Astros 2009 roster today and this is the first part of that attempt. My plan is to look at three different phases of the roster, starting with the monetary worth of all the players, followed by how the position players performed and then how the pitchers did. Hopefully, by knowing what the Astros were last year, it will help predict what they need...

Drayton McLane has said the Astros won't trade Roy Oswalt and Lance Berkman unless they ask to be traded. His thinking is to keep adding, to reshape the club and to hope for improvement and maybe even respectability in 2010. Defensively, the Astros could be dramatically better in 2010. Tommy Manzella will make plays Miguel Tejada can't even think of making. He's not going to provide the same offense,...

Ryan Doumit homered and Garrett Jones had an RBI single for the last-place Pirates, who had dropped five in a row overall. MILWAUKEE – Geoff Blum drove in four runs, Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer in the eighth and the Houston Astros rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-5 on Sunday. Blum hit a three-run homer in the sixth and an RBI single in the ninth for Houston, which managed to get the win despite a shaky start by Roy Oswalt. Lance Berkman walked twice and scored three times. The loss ended Milwaukee's three-game...
