JJ Hardy, Carlos Gomez And The Nature of "Selling Low"

On Friday the Twins and Brewers completed a trade that sent Carlos Gomez to the land of cheese, and JJ Hardy to the place with the new stadium that nonsensically has no roof despite the local climates. On the...

GroupThought: The JJ Hardy-Carlos Gomez Trade

Here's the first installment of GroupThought. Want to know what the smart baseball people think about the day's big deal? It's all right here. Today's Deal: Twins receive shortstop J.J. Hardy from the Milwaukee Brewers for centerfielder Carlos Gomez. Interestingly, everyone wrote about Hardy first which of course means Gomez is merely an afterthought to everyone but the Brewers. GroupThinker: ESPN.com's...

Detroit Tigers not involved in trade talks for SS J.J. Hardy

Although the Detroit Tigers have an opening at shortstop, they weren’t involved in the trade talks for shortstop J.J. Hardy, whom Milwaukee dealt today to the Twins for outfielder Carlos Gomez. In an e-mail to the Free Press, Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin said he didn’t contact the Tigers about Hardy because they didn’t have what [...]

The Weekend Linkfest!

Some things to read while being a real man or while putting up your holiday decorations . I would like to preface this by kind of letting everyone know what is going on. As KL posted friday , Morineko, FtJ and I will be your new weekend editors. What that means is we will be hanging around and posting a weekend news post to keep things alive on the weekends. KL asked us to "make it our own"...

Vicente Padilla's off-field problems may cause Los Angeles Dodgers to turn away

Vicente Padilla 's pitching ability wasn't the issue when the Rangers released him in midseason. It's the off-the-field activity and his ability to alienate teammates that limits his value. The Dodgers had said they were interested in re-signing him but are asking hard questions about an incident in which he was shot in the right thigh last week in his native Nicaragua. The shooting did appear to be...

Gomez trade could have implications for the Mets

Another former Met center fielder who Marty Noble believes is on the Mets radar to play left field (source MLB.com). With the deal, the Brewers said goodbye to veteran Mike Cameron, their starting centerfielder the past...

Aftermath from the Hardy for Gomez Trade

This was a shocking trade and I have not really made up my mind on the trade. Some RFB’ers have said that they like the trade. For me, it really depends on what pitchers the Brewers get now without J.J. Hardy. John Lackey’s name is out there and he would be AMAZING to bring in. [...]

Let's Sign Mike Cameron Anyway

More photos » by Tony Dejak - AP This is what I'm talking about, baby. (AP Photo/Tony Dejak) Browse more photos » We've got Carlos Gomez now. I haven't looked really closely at his numbers, but my first take is that it's a fair deal. The Twins get a somewhat better player for 2010 in J.J. Hardy, but we get someone who is cheaper, fills a hole, and might improve while still under team control....

The Coming Avalanche of Non-Tenders?

More photos » by Charlie Riedel - AP Browse more photos » A team with a player in his "arbitration years" has essentially three options. First, it can go through the arbitration process (using what is known as " Final Offer Arbitration "). Second, it can reach a contract to avoid arbitration, whether it is a long term deal or merely a one-year deal that splits the difference...

Minor League Report...November 7, 2009

A couple items of note this week include the Twins outrighting Brian Buscher to Rochester. This cleared a 40-man roster spot before the five free agents are removed in the next week. Why this was done at this time remains a mystery? My best guess is that the Twins were in discussion on some deal from which they may have needed an open spot on their roster. It turned out to not be the case with the...
