Some links to read through on Ryan Howard's 30th birthday... MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports that the Marlins may spend on a corner outfielder, a second baseman or a third baseman if they free up some payroll by trading Dan Uggla. Jamey Carroll is one of the many free agents the Marlins would consider. The Brewers are open to bringing Craig Counsell back, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. Ken Rosenthal...

According to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com (via Twitter), the Marlins have some amount of interest in free-agent infielder Jamey Carroll. Gonzalez spoke Wednesday with Carroll's agent, Jonathan Maurer, who said the Marlins are pursuing the 35-year-old infielder, but not as aggressively as some other teams. According to Maurer, 10 other clubs have expressed interest in Carroll, who hit .276/.355/.340 in...

Bye Bye Bruntlett No longer will we have to ask the question "Why is Eric Bruntlett on the Phillies?" As of today, he's gone from the 40-man roster, along with John Ennis, Paul Hoover, Andy Tracy, and Tyler Walker. Todd Zolecki reports that Bruntlett and Walker "will not be back next season"; the other three could return on minor league deals. Perhaps less heartening is Zolecki's...

The Nationals are considering a number of options up the middle. Here's the latest: MLB.com's Bill Ladson expects the Nationals to try trading Cristian Guzman this offseason. It won't be easy, given his $8MM salary. Manager Jim Riggleman likes Ian Desmond, but others within the organization believe the infielder needs more minor league seasoning. Could Ronnie Belliard return to play second base? Ladson...

In analyzing possible targets for the Twins this offseason, I'm starting to realize that I've been perhaps overly positive. J.J. Hardy? Great acquisition ! Carl Pavano? Bring him back ! Adrian Beltre? Great fit ! And don't forget about my sleeper free agent second baseman, Jamey Carroll! Lest I start to look like anything other than a nay-saying curmudgeon, let's spend today's post talking about a...

A few notes from ESPN's Buster Olney... Olney believes other teams could join the Reds and Tigers in cost-cutting mode. He says the teams with payroll space "will be in position to make some excellent deals." Olney finds it unlikely that Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, or John Lackey will receive a $100MM contract. Catcher Brad Ausmus on 2010: "I could end up playing if somebody wants me."...

Good news! The Paw Sox aren't playing tonight. Woohoo! Thankfully, Terry Francona is sending out a real lineup after the shellacking last night. Like I said in the game recap, let's hope the Sox finish on a good note. A four game sweep would be nice. At least let them look good, huh?
