Marlon Byrd and Pudge Rodriguez both decline arbitration, per T.R. Sullivan . That was expected. Not expected, though, is the report from Yahoo's Tim Brown that the Washington Nationals have signed Pudge Rodriguez to a 2 year, $6 million deal. If true, that's baffling. Pudge was a nice insurance policy for the Rangers , if he had accepted arbitration, although I suspect the Rangers weren't interesting...

And yes, it's his throwing shoulder . The Rangers catcher had shoulder worked on to repair thoracic outlet syndrome; the injury is not uncommon, and may be the result of scar tissue being torn. Free agent Pudge Rodriguez could get a lot more money as a consequence. (Via David Pinto .)

I still feel like this is an awful idea unless they get a great offer. "Catching has become an increasingly difficult position for teams to fill, yet there are some interesting names floating as trade possibilities:...

1. Do you agree that the usage of instant replay in baseball needs to be expanded? For that matter, has the questionable post-season umpiring already pushed baseball beyond the tipping point? 2. Now that we know that mutual interest exists between the Rangers and free agent-eligible outfielder Marlon Byrd, what is the absolute largest contract offer -- in terms of both dollars and years -- that you...
