Wilson & Mariners agree to $10 million, 2-yr deal

SEATTLE – After shortstop Jack Wilson arrived in Seattle in a trade last summer, it didn't take long for him to know he wanted to stay. "About an hour, hour and a half," Wilson said by telephone with a chuckle from his home in Southern California on Friday. Now he has 10 million more reasons to love Seattle. The 31-year-old defensive whiz signed a $10 million, two-year contract with

Pirates inquire on Nady, Villone

By Dejan Kovacevic | 11:03 a.m. Thursday The Pirates have made initial free-agent inquiries on outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Ron Villone , but neither is expected to blossom into serious interest until much later in the offseason, if at all. Rather, the team, as it has with most free agents contacted so far, is informing free agents of interest in the event that those players are still available...

Possible Rule 5 Pick: George Kontos

I was just reading through the comments on Vlad's excellent post about potential Rule 5 picks, and I got to thinking that one guy the Pirates might actually consider is George Kontos of the Yankees . This isn't a pick I'm necessarily endorsing --I haven't done enough research yet, but the guy I'm most interested in so far is the Rays ' Aneury Rodriguez . But I think the Pirates will think hard about...

Morning links: Positional upgrade?

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:40 a.m. Wednesday Pitchers, pitchers, pitchers. Judging by the conversations I've had the past couple days, every where the Pirates are looking, they are looking for pitchers, not so much position players. And maybe there is a reason for that, as one look at the free-agent list for first basemen or outfielders shows Rick Ankeil and Hank Blalock and ... not much else that really...

Lefties, Lefties Everywhere

More photos » by Chris Carlson - AP Would another lefty hitter like Hank Blalock, right, be the best fit for the Pirates? Browse more photos » Straight to the point today: one thing I find a bit strange about the idea of the Pirates pursuing Rick Ankiel and/or Hank Blalock is that both those guys are left-handed, whereas most of the Bucs' other options at first base and right field ( Garrett...

Pirates Kicking The Tires On Ankiel & Blalock

The Pirates are believed to have already made contact with Scott Boras about two of his clients, free agents Rick Ankiel and Hank Blalock, according to Dejan Kovacevic of The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. The team's preference "is for a short-term contract aimed at allowing the player a chance at full-time duty to revive their careers." With Andrew McCutchen in center and Lastings Milledge serving...

Morning links: A stove rekindled

By Dejan Kovacevic | 12:40 a.m. Friday Hey, who turned on the lights? Hope everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving, as well as all the other time that lapsed so quickly since the final out in Cincinnati. From a week in Mexico to a drive to Niagara Falls to simply teaching the kids some street hockey in the driveway (yes, the back is all the way back), it has been an outstanding break. But, as with all...

Ryan Doumit and the Prospect of "Selling Low"

More photos » by Gene J. Puskar - AP Browse more photos » The hot stove is in full effect, and teams are taking a hard look at their rosters to prepare for the winter meetings. One team that has already been busy is the Pittsburg Pirates, as they previously acquired Akinori Iwamura from Tampa Bay. Last year, one of the Pirates ' most expensive players was catcher Ryan Doumit . After a .318/.357/.501...

Mariners keep Wilson in Seattle through 2011

The Mariners will keep shortstop Jack Wilson in Seattle through 2011. The team announced a new two-year contract Friday with the 30-year-old shortstop. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Wilson was acquired from Pittsburgh on July 29, along with pitcher Ian Snell, for infielder Ronny Cedeno, catcher Jeff Clement and three minor league pitchers. In 31 games Wilson hit .224 with one home run....
