Jeff Ridgway has elbow surgery Some extra insight into why the Braves released Ridgway last week. This was apparently Ridgway's fifth surgery in his career. Reading some of his quotes, I can't help but feel really bad for the guy. You can see the determination, but his body can't cooperate.

Per Marc Topkin: Other players released recently from minor-league camp include INF Chase Fontaine, who was acquired form Atlanta in January 2008 with Willy Aybar for LHP Jeff Ridgway (who was released by the Braves this week), LHP Jino Gonzalez, INF Patrick Cottrell and INF Michael Ross. Fallout from the Willy Aybar Trade Stacy Long reports that the Braves have released Jeff Ridgway. He also reports that Chase Fontaine, the other player the Rays received was also released last week. Ridgway went to Atlanta in a January 2008 trade that brought major-league infielder Willy Aybar and minor-leaguer Chase Fontaine to the Rays. Fontaine was released last week by Tampa Bay, but Aybar is still...

Braves Release Jeff Ridgway He apparently came into spring training with a sore left elbow, and with O'Flaherty and Logan and a few bad outings he didn't have a chance. This ultimately ends anything we received for Wilson Betemit, as he was traded for Baez and Aybar, and Aybar was traded for Ridgway. The Braves now have two open spots on their 40-man roster.

via i349.photobucket.com Acquired for Jeff Ridgway in January, Aybar was a key cog for the team. Aybar's versatility paid off big time. He ended up being a very useful utility player playing every infield position over the course of the year and playing them pretty well. Looking at Willy Aybar's stats for the season, one would think it was disipointment. He had the lowest wOBA of his career (.332,...

So it’s September, which means that we’ll get to see a slightly expanded roster. Brent Lillibridge, James Parr, Corky Miller, and Jeff Ridgway. (Ridgway makes me unaccountably mad these days: he’s been terrible every time he sniffs the big leagues these days, and of course Willy Aybar, who couldn’t clean himself up when he was [...]
