Thinking about first basemen in history

So I was thinking about something last night, and it occurred to me that it would be an interesting topic for discussion here to see what folks at LSB think... I think almost everyone who knows baseball would agree that Lou Gehrig was the greatest first baseman of all time. And I think almost every who knows baseball would agree that Jimmie Foxx was the second-greatest first baseman of all time. But...

Evan Longoria and The 500 Home Run Club

More photos » by Chris O'Meara - AP Browse more photos » As 2010 projections start to be released, we will take a look at some of the more important ones from time to time. Projections are what they are, but they are still fun to look at. All in all, I would say the ZiPs projections are a bit more realistic than the Bill James projections because ZiPs tends to be a bit conservative. Aside...

Throwback Uniforms: A's and White Sox (1929)

On August 16th, the Oakland Athletics celebrated the 80th anniversary of the 1929 Philadelphia Athletics, who won the World Series, by dressing up in their old uniforms from the '29 season. $18 outfield tickets were dropped to $9.29, $30 box seats were dropped to $19.29, and 10,000 fans walked away with retro A's jerseys. A's manager Bob Geren came out in a suit and tie, a nod to the legendary skipper...

2009 trivia

Here are a few interesting tidbits from the 2009 season, courtesy of SABR's Madison McEntire: The Yankees became just the 13th team to have six or more players with 80 RBIs, and just the third to have at least seven players with 80 RBIs. The 1939 Yankees had seven and the 2003 Red Sox had eight. The Phillies became the 12th team (with 11 of them coming since 1995) to have four players with at least...

Top Run Producers

A player's RBI/PA average can show a decent amount, especially if they are supposed to a middle-of-the-order power hitter/run producer. It is nice if a run producer has a high OBP or steals bases or doesn't strike out, but they are really there to drive in runs. Some hitters, of course, have been very fortunate to hit in the middle of a great lineup (Albert Belle or David Ortiz, for instance) for...

.549 Winning % for 6 Straight Years

OK, so, the other day I pointed out that the Angels , with their 89th win this year, became 1 of only 8 franchises in ML history to chalk up 89 wins in 6 consecutive seasons. As commenters rightly pointed out, this wasn't exactly a fair fight for those quality teams who played less than 162 games in a season (everyone before '61, and then also '72, '81, '94, and '95) . So, I decided to take our baseline...

Larry Walker: Hall of Famer?

I think Larry Walker's candidacy for the Hall of Fame, which will come up in 2011, is very interesting because of how Coors Field fits into his legacy. He was also a relatively quiet star, who had numerous injuries and played for many years on the generally uncompetitive Rockies. There are several issues to address regarding Larry Walker's Hall of Fame candidacy for the Hall of Fame. 1. Are his numbers...

A (More) Relevant Post

OK, so your Texas Rangers have played admirably, but the August swoon looks like it may well be upon our heroes. The Rangers surprising season has had my thoughts shifting away from this and toward to the great game overall and I've perused several lists claiming an all century/all-time lineup. With a few exceptions, it is all but impossible to choose the single greatest player at any given position....

Walking Off

“...in the Retrosheet era.” There's no denying the immense drama that surrounds the walk-off home run. From Bobby Thomson in 1951 to Bill Mazeroski in '60, Kirk Gibson in '89, Joe Carter in '93, Big Papi in 2004 and more, the walk-off home run has been inspiring writers and baseball fans alike for decades. It's even helped get certain players elected to the Hall of Fame. Thanks to SABR,...
