2009 Mets Gangsta and Grission Awards

(bumped from fanposts. --eric) With the 2009 season done and over, it's time to start handing out hardware. I present to you the first annual Gangsta and Grission Awards. Some of the categories had very tight races, while others were as one-sided as the Imperfect Game. The votes are in, however, and all winners receive as a way to remember their achievements, a Golden Jerry. Most Gangsta Injury Jonathon...

What the Cardinals can take from the Yankees, besides the luxury tax

First, some briefs on yesterday's roster moves: It's interesting to see the Brad Thompson perception gap—the RotoWorld box in the sidebar thinks he'll have no problem finding a job, even as a fifth starter; the Baseball Primer thread is remarkably positive, for BTF. But I think the average VEBer wrote off the artist occasionally known as WonderBrad a long time ago. I'll always think of him as...

Let's talk about the past just this once

Comeback Player of the Year and Roster moves

Chris Carpenter's outstanding season has been recognized by Major League Baseball with his selection as NL Comeback Player of the Year. Carp put aside all the questions about his health this season and won 17 games, led the majors in winning percentage (.810), and led the NL in ERA (2.24) and ERA+ (185). Carp also had a 3.79 strikeout-to-walk ratio (144 K vs 38 BB), and allowed 7 home runs this season....

Just how good is the Dodger bullpen?

An ESPN writer in a recent article comparing playoff bullpens didn't bother to evaluate the Dodgers and dismissively predicted that they would be swept in three games anyway because "Nearly every year, one September favorite forgets to show up in October. This year, it will be the Dodgers" (see this fanpost for more.) This despite claiming that "So often, postseason survival comes down...

Clinching Doesn’t Solve Everything

The Cardinals were able to lock up the NL Central this weekend. They weren’t able to lock down worries about the postseason, however. The clincher was nice and you have to give all credit to Adam Wainwright . 130 pitches and he’s still able to strike out batters to keep the St. Louis lead in the eighth. Chris Carpenter says that locked down the Cy Young for him . While I’m still...

Cardinals 6, Rockies 3: Cards' bench powers past Rox for division title

More photos » by David Zalubowski - AP Unfortunately, he touched the plate Browse more photos » A night after the Rockies collected around first base to celebrate a walk-off win, St. Louis met midfield to celebrate clinching the NL Central at Coors Field after defeating the Rockies 6-3. For the second straight start, Ubaldo Jimenez struggled in the first inning. For the second straight...

What did we learn last night?

Tony did something very telling last night in the 9th, right before McClellan blew the game (btw, why is McClellan in the game there and not Franklin'). He double-switched Julio Lugo into the game in place of Rasmus. Skip went from 2nd to CF and Lugo went to 2nd base. This move told us a few things about Tony's thought process as we approach the postseason. First, Colby wasn't the obvious choice to...

FIRST PITCH: Twitter and Cardinals’ Manager Make Up

Once Twitter’s arch-nemesis, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is now buddy-buddy with the primetime startup. Need proof? Cardinals fans at tonight’s baseball game were treated to a ceremonial opening pitching by none other than Jack Dorsey , Twitter’s Creator and Co-founder. According to USA Today , Dorsey got some pitching advice from La Russa and then “floated a...

Free Allen Craig!

Before this year, one of the Cardinals greatest strengths was considered to be their excellent depth at third base. The incumbent, Troy Glaus , had put up a 5 WAR season in his first year with the club and most thought that he would able to produce similar results this year if healthy. In addition to that, prospects David Freese and Joe Mather were coming off great years in AAA and were expected to...

A Motte Proposal

Troy Glaus takes a swing in anger. (photo courtesy momup) View full size photo uploaded September 4, 2009 I missed most of yesterday's game, for a variety of reasons, and when I left the Cardinals had their narrow lead. So I was happy to learn, when I finally checked the box score, that it wasn't the bullpen that messed things up (and happier still to learn that it wasn't altogether Smoltz's fault,...

Forget the Ballgame. Just Take Me Out.

Breaking news update: The Red Sox have clinched the AL Wild Card lead. Boy, this stuff changes fast! As of today, the Red Sox and the Rangers are tied for the AL Wild Card lead. ("Uh-huh, and...?")
