Some things to read while the Muppets make everything better (h/t Daily Drink ). In the interest of getting it done as early as possible, today's Mug is bullet pointed again: Prince Fielder finished fourth in the NL MVP balloting , appearing on all 32 ballots and getting five second place votes ( FanShot ). Ryan Braun also appeared on 16 ballots en route to an 11th place finish, but was ranked no higher...

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that the Brewers have signed John Halama to a minor-league deal with an invitation to major league camp. Halama, 37, also drew interest from the Toronto Blue Jays. His career numbers are 56-48 with a 4.65 ERA. In 2009, he pitched to a 4.48 ERA in 90 1/3 innings with Gwinnett, Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate. Milwaukee is a good landing spot for Halama. The Brewers are eager...

Evil Empire manager Joe Girardi is looking to change his uniform number from 27 to 28. My suggestion to him is to 86 this idea. Another would involve the number 96 backwards and any of his players. In all fairness, Girardi did bail someone out of a jam recently. Personally, I think it's ridiculous for managers and coaches to have numbers to begin with. They're usually wearing team-issued windbreakers...

A tip of the retro Blue Jays cap to Bauxite brent for pointing out that the Jays are taking a gander at lefty John Halama down in the Dominican. Should the Jays sign the 37 year-old hurler, it would continue a trend by GM Alex Anthopoulos of acquiring players whose last name begins with " H ". Halama would join fellow southpaw Sean Henn and second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir in the " H...

MLB.com's Jordan Bastian tweets that the Blue Jays will watch lefty John Halama pitch in to the Dominican Republic tomorrow. Halama hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2006, so Bastian isn't sure how interested the team really is. The Braves picked Halama up out of an independent league back in June, though he didn't make it out of Triple-A. He is currently pitching in the Dominican Winter League,...

There's at least one Braves team in the playoffs, unfortunately that minor league team -- the Gwinnett Braves -- has the same problem the major league club does -- it can't score any runs. Sporting a starting lineup that includes players with major league experience in 7 of the 9 spots, and baseball's top prospect batting third, the G-Braves only managed to get one runner past second base all night....

Gwinnett 4, Toledo 8 C. Burke 3-5 2B B. Jones 3-4 2 2B, 3B B. Barton 2-3 2 RBI, CS(7) John Halama got hammered for 7 runs in 5 innings in this game, definitely his worst start so far as a Brave. I wonder if Brandon Jones was pouting for most of the year for not making the big club and now he is over it, because he has apparently found his power stroke in the last few weeks. Just in his last 10 games...

I didn't know a lot about baseball when I was 15. I thought Alex Rodriguez was the worst person in the world. I thought Jack Cust was a future MVP in the making. I thought John Stephens was going to change the way the world thought about pitching. I thought Mike Cameron was okay. I thought Darin Erstad was a flukey pile of crap. I thought Oakland was the model franchise, defense wasn't important, Gillick...

Someone was asking about playoff chances for the various minor league clubs. I'll get into that tonight in the recaps. Rochester 4, Gwinnett 2 C. Burke 2-4 2B, HR(3), BB B. Conrad 1-2 2BB Tim Hudson was scheduled to start this game buy left before throwing a pitch due to apparent groin soreness. As long as his arm didn't fall off I'm cool with it. Out of all our full season teams, Gwinnett has the...
