Here's a concern moving forward, unless the Mets are going to build an incredible offense to over compensate for a mediocre rotation they need a solid number two pitcher. I Don't see the Mets signing Matt Holliday, Bengie Molina, Orlando Hudson, Garret Atkins ( for the bench) and trading for Adrian Gonzalez, so the rotation will need to be addressed. As far as free agency, there is John Lackey who...

Meet the Mets Some minor league news to pass along to you all. Ike Davis has been named to the AFL Rising Stars Game (kind of like an All-Star team) . Also, Reese Havens will give second base a try . Thank you Ted Berg for posting about Tsuyoshi Shinjo . That made my day. I once had a Shinjo poster for my dorm room. Good times. Jeff Francouer had surgery on his hand without anesthesia. That is what...

In a mailbag Q&A for MLB.com, Mets reporter Marty Noble believes the Mets would need to trade players like John Maine and Fernando Martinez, ‘in a deal to get a No. 2 pitcher or a power hitter.’ Maine was 2–2 with a 4.12 ERA in his final four starts after returning from the disabled list in 2009. …there [...]

The Mets penciled John Maine into the 2009 rotation despite uncertainty about his health, following bone spur surgery after 2008. Expecting him to return to 2007 form was a stretch but it wasn't unreasonable to think he could provide 140 innings with a ~4.30 FIP. The various preseason projection systems pegged him around this level of performance. Like most of the Mets, Maine's season didn't turn out...

More photos » by Ben Margot - AP Browse more photos » Yesterday, Jon Heyman "tweeted" that the Mets wouldn't be pushing hard for John Lackey . I was happy to hear this news, but puzzled when I read on metsblog that 69% of their readers would prefer Lackey to Matt Holliday , assuming a choice between the two. For those of you wanting Lackey, hopefully I can try and account for...

This past weekend, at his blog for the New York Post, Joel Sherman suggested the Mets look at acquiring Jeremy Guthrie, Gil Meche and Ervin Santana, as buy-low candidates. Today, at Amazin Avenue, Sam Page takes a statistical look at Guthrie and Meche, and suggests three other buy-low candidates to consider. Speaking of acquisitions, Ed Leyro of [...]

When May rolls around next year, John Maine will be 29 years old. That said, you can no longer look at him as a young pitcher on the rise. In fact, the opposite is true; in many ways, Maine has gone backward since 2006. His ERA has increased from 3.60 to 3.91 to 4.18 to 4.43. [...]

(note: bumped from FanPosts) In the same vein as yesterday's Minor League free agents, these are the John Maine -esque, under the radar steals of typically cheap, young pitchers that for whatever reason become available. Whether it's a post-hype prospect (like Maine), a 4-5 starter that's out of options but won't make the 40-man or just a player that's being overlooked, usually this is someone who...

As I said yesterday and still stand by my belief that the staff moves simply weren't enough. My biggest contention is with Dan Warthen who was unaware of Johan Santana pitching through discomfort and skipping side sessions since the All-Star break in a meaningless season. The regression of Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, K-Rod and Oliver Perez. Green was his prize success story dropping him down to a 3/4...

After the last game on Sunday, Jerry Manuel said the Mets need to do some "tweaking" for next year. The Mets need a lot more than tweaking, but you wouldn't know it from Monday's news about the coaching staff. So Razor Shines and Luis Alicea need to go because of all the baserunning miscues. It took Manuel all year to figure out that something was wrong with the coaching on the bases? Then...

Last night, John Maine went seven innings, and allowed just a run on five hits and struck out seven and walked none, which was the first time he hasn’t walked a batter in an outing this season. He made 106 pitches, 72 of which were strikes. Most importantly, Maine was efficient and his pitches were free and [...]

You're not just reading the blog for Mets fans who like to read. You're reading the blog entry of a Mets fan who set a record Friday night — a personal record, but a record just the same. With the Mets' decisive victory over the Astros , I improved my 2009 home season mark to 24-10. Four times previously (including two regular season/postseason combos) I reached 23 wins. That was the heights....
